CRITICAL APPRECIATIONS
Monday, January 14, 2008. It is history now when we had to prepare critical appreciations of prose and poetry for our ISCE and ISC exams. But the habit I guess has remained. Whenever I read a book and the book has impressed me, I feel merely reading is not enough. I devote some time thinking about it, thinking about the plot, the important characters and ultimately the questions if any the book is able to raise. And then I paper them down.It helps. The Fountainhead
Originally written on September 14, 2005. 8220;Man’s ego is the fountainhead of all his progress” this is the idea based on which Ayn Rand has developed her novel The Fountainhead. First of all I would like to deal with the important characters of the novel before talking about the novel as a whole. Great humanitarian, majestic speaker and representative of masses, he is one who I like to associate with the Indian arthashastra guru Chanakya. I feel he rules the whole plot and gives direction to event...

Atlas Shrugged

Why does he have to fight his battles not against his enemies but against those who need him most? Why does he fight his hardest battle against the woman he loves? 8217;s rejection of the conventional split between reason and emotion,...

The novel has a very important place in the works of Paulo Coelho, not just because it is the first of his major books, after which came ‘The Alchemist’, but because of the complete way in which it expresses the humanity of Paulo’s philosophy and the depth of his search. Each of these exercises and the way to do them has...

The Old Man And The Sea
The Old Man And The Sea. Originally written on August 19, 2004. Every next time you read the book, there’s even more emotional intoxication offered by Hemingway, who has created a masterpiece, one which forces us to redefine our definitions of struggle, defeat and death. The recognitions that he achieved for the novel in Pulitzer Prize and The Nobel Prize, the next year for his style of writing in The Old Man and The Sea seem so much justified. 8220; A man can be destroyed but not defeated. My Favourite Quotes
Some people are born geniuses, but most of us have to work hard and ultimately we all get there. I respect the latter ones more. Et tu, Brute! Act III, Scene I, Julius Caesar. My Poems
Monday, January 14, 2008. Wordsworth defined poetry as ' spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.'. I have been writing prose ever since my childhood (say when I was eight years old) but I began writing poems only about three years ago when I realised one day that I could try myself at the complex and aesthetic art called poetry. However poetry I believe is much more difficult than prose and one needs to have a very strong reason to write poems.
