Sumi and Endo Families. In the early 1900s, when the Palos Verdes Peninsula was mainly ranch land, Japanese farmers began cultivating about 2000 coastal acres, which stretched from Malaga Cove to Western Avenue. Using special dry farming methods with crops that flourished in moist air conditions, these farmers played a significant role in providing vegetables for California dinner tables, as well as garbanzo beans for worldwide markets. Sumi and Endo Families. Gosaku Yokota was born in 1889 in Yawata, Gunma Prefecture. Gosaku married Ume Yoshida who was born in 1898 also in Yawata, Gunma Prefecture. Gosaku and Ume had the following children:. Eiko (1921 in Ventura). Shuichi (1923 in Los Angeles). Miyeko (or Mieko) (1936).

Masaki Tanaka Family | 40 Families Story

Sumi and Endo Families. Their children were: Hiroshi born in 1913; Fumiye, 1914; Shigeo, 1918; Kimiye, 1922; and Ineko, 1924. In the 1930 Federal Census Masaki’s farm was described as on the Sepulveda Estates on the top of the hill west of Western Avenue. Apparently Masaki had moved his farm to higher ground on the eastern slope of San Pedro Hill. Masaki died in December 1950. Kaori died in October 1984 in Montebello. Shigeo died in 1997 in Santa Barbara, California.

After the war, when the internees were released from camps, the War Relocation Authority created records of where they were going. The Library owns the complete set of 10 reels, one for each camp: Jerome, AR; Central Utah (Topaz); Colorado River (Poston, AZ); Gila River (AZ); Granada (Amache, CO); Heart Mountain (WY); Manzanar (CA); Minidoka (ID); Rohwer (AR); and Tule Lake (CA).
