서울특별시 강북구 산4.19로8길 17. 광복 이후 기성 지도층의 좌우대립과 격동하는 정치혼란 속에 6ㆍ25를 맞고 50년대 후반기로 접어들면서 대학의 자유, 지식인의 현실참여, 민족주의에 대한 논의가 활기를 띠면서 학생들의 정치현실에 대한 불만이 응결되었다. 그리하여 자유당 부패정권과 3 15 부정선거를 규탄하는 대대적인 학생운동이1960년 4월19일을 절정으로 전국 곳곳에서 일어나 12년간에 걸친 독재정권을 무너뜨리고 민주주의 운동으로 발전되었으며, 이 사건으로 4 19당시 185명이 사망하고 수많은 부상자가 발생하였다. 1963년 9월 20일에 건립된 이 묘역에는 당시 사망자와 부상자중 사망한 237명의 영령들이 잠들고 있으며, 정부의 성역화 사업으로 1993년 10월 첫 공사를 시작하여 종전 13,000평의 묘역을 41,000평으로 넓혀 새로 단장하고, 1995년 4월 18일 국무회의에서 4 19묘역을 국립묘지로 승격하여 현재 국가보훈처에서 관리하고 있다.
