4 Winds: heart in the clarts

http://4windsnavigation.blogspot.com/2010/10/heart-in-clarts.html

Tuesday, 26 October 2010. Heart in the clarts. Being nice and flat I can usually nip round the 12km in about 1hr 15 mins although I sometimes run back down North Hessary as far as the newbuilds and back up to make the most of its modest incline. He said in ref to my latest West Devon Diary article. 'Ah, so this is the madman you were telling us about then, Terry? Said one. Fame at last. (or infamy more like). The clarts, as usual, did not disappoint. The ones around Leeden Tor tend to be a bit gritty...

4 Winds: Clear Trails

http://4windsnavigation.blogspot.com/2011/08/clear-trails.html

Monday, 1 August 2011. Easily the hardest run I've ever done made do-able by the superb checkpoint crews who looked after me like I was the only runner there. Brilliant to have met David (Ultra Running Collie) and Adam whose superb local knowledge made the night section a lot easier. By this point I'd lost the ability to read and remember the punchlines of jokes (something to do with a car and David Beckham, anyway). 1 August 2011 at 06:37. That sounds really awesome! Great that you got to meet David!

4 Winds: Cut Hill Stone Row

http://4windsnavigation.blogspot.com/2010/05/cut-hill-stone-row.html

Monday, 17 May 2010. Cut Hill Stone Row. The start of a good spell of weather meant kit up and get out for a long-ish one. It's been a few months since I had a run up to Cut Hill and a good opportunity to get a few shots on the way for a talk I'm giving on aircraft crash sites on the moor. A swoopy downhill and a bit of bog-trotting brought us to the crash site. The remains of the Sea Vixen which crashed here in 1965 can still be seen round the edges of the pool (not marked on the OS either.). 18 May 201...

4 Winds: Rough Tor Route

http://4windsnavigation.blogspot.com/2010/10/rough-tor-route.html

Monday, 11 October 2010. Rough Tor itself has been spoiled by two grey metal boxes which serve as military stables and a look-out with a flagpole stuck in the middle, but I reckon it has some of the best views on Dartmoor. From here it was all downhill to Crow Tor, re-crossing the West Dart and a quick climb up to Longaford Tor. All downhill now to Crockern Tor Farm and a good opportunity to open it up a bit before the flat rough track back to the car park. 11 October 2010 at 13:11. Run for your Life.

4 Winds: Flat Tor plodge

http://4windsnavigation.blogspot.com/2010/10/flat-tor-plodge.html

Friday, 1 October 2010. Chucking it down coupled with a Met Office severe weather warning meant ideal conditions to get out for a plodge in the clarts. Parking at Postbridge I was eyed suspiciously by a couple of fat blokes in Dartmoor National Park fleeces in the visitors' centre as I set off clutching my camera and a dog lead. Although a modest river, the East Dart can put on a bit of a display at times. From here it was up and over Broad Down and back down Drift Lane to the car park. 2 October 2010 at...

Sink, bike, run. Three falls, but no submission. November 17, 2013 at 10:14 pm Posted in Uncategorized Leave a comment. After detouring off-road on the cross bike with some mountain-bike-(ish) orienteering earlier this year, part two of bending the edges of my comfort zone was to actually race some cyclocross. I did a little bit of practising with Roy. Who did his best to teach me not to do a Joey. And, I did find that the cross mount/dismount is very handy for free speed in T1 and T2 at tris. I do know ...

In a big house, sized for noise, bikes, happy people and stuff. And Dawlish suits us (until Threlkeld drifts nearer and all the short people drift further). It’s a ladybird. That sells ice-creams bigger than my face, as well as cake, pies and beer swoon . If I cycle to work (12 miles flat or longer with hills. Ne...

My legs are still happily (it’s a pain-pleasure thing) reminding me about my day out on Saturday at the Anniversary Waltz. This year, I had 150 fellrunners behind me, and another 150 ahead, and the sheep had had a better offer. Sink, bike, run. Let un sink as swims’. December 31, 2012 at 5:32 pm Posted in Uncategorized Leave a comment. I’m the one in the orange hat. It’s nicer than the pool, but where has everyone else gone? I gave daughter #1 a book of Saki short stories for Christmas, which dislodged the incantation ‘Let un sink as swims’ from the back of my head where these things huddle. Anyway, I looked it up, and the story. Which brings me to yesterday’s swim. Becki and I went to the pool for a quick (ha! I still didn’t t...

Sink, bike, run. If you can meet with tri-umph and disaster. July 14, 2010 at 11:23 pm Posted in Uncategorized Leave a comment. Into the sea, you and me. Although I’ve dabbled with a quadrathlon (but didn’t inhale), it shocked me the other day to realise that I hadn’t actually done a triathlon for two years. I’d last completed a triathlon in Plymouth, as long ago as July 2008, and then a dire lack of training (do I surprise you? In a cold wet heap soon after the sea. Well; on all the tris I’ve done, I’ve...

Sink, bike, run. Seaweed, seaward and seawood. November 2, 2013 at 11:42 pm Posted in Uncategorized Leave a comment. I like a nice ritual (Catholic upbringing and all that), and all through the summer my reflective yellow winter running bib hangs on the end of the bannister, huddled against the sun, waiting for autumn to be in the air. It gradually gets covered in Stuff, before nudging its way forwards about the same time as the clocks go backwards. Someone once told me that for effective training, I sho...

Sink, bike, run. First swim of the year. May 8, 2014 at 7:42 pm Posted in Uncategorized Leave a comment. It was murky in the Teign today, murky and cold (which is always the worst kind of murky). Edging into the water, it took a stumble of faith to get my head in-and-a-bit-under, and from then on half my world was river-green (and the other half was being rained on). Face-bitingly cold, and murky too, (which is the always the worst kind of cold). Did I say it was murky and cold? Leave a Comment ». 4 wind...

It’s good to note that after some years of trying, I finally got round the Plymouth tri without my bike exploding. My time and position were mildly disappointing, but then again so were my training, so I cant squabble much about them. I had the Saunders. Still in my legs, and a lack of swimming in my arms, and the swim and bike were just a hot and crowded waiting room for the run ( Mr Nausea will see you now ). You are...
