Dear readers - I will warn you now that this post has nothing to do with food. I have had a horrible cold for the past week and have had no desire to do anything in the kitchen! Here are some of my favorite items and artists. Eat and Joy - Re...

Dear readers - I will be taking a break from my Finnish cooking adventures. My doctor has advised me to follow a low-fat diet, so baking and cooking in earnest is probably not a good idea for now. Especially cookies and the like! As I read throug...

MAISEMAA, RAKENNUSTA, RUOKAA: Hyvää Suomesta

MAISEMAA, RAKENNUSTA, RUOKAA. Click on any photo to enlarge it. Among Europeans, Finnish food is not always highly regarded, but I have found that it is generally quite good. The cuisine is based on high-quality raw ingredients rather than elaborate preparations; it might thus be considered closer to the Italian tradition than to the French. Here are eleven Finnish foods which I will particuarly miss after I return to North America:. These are the amazing mushrooms. 2 The world's best seafood. Merits its...

The heroic Soviet-era (1964) Kosmos cinema, with its heroic fire stair. Tallinn has more flower markets, and more people carrying bouquets, than any other city I have been in. MAISEMAA, RAKENNUSTA, RUOKAA. Click on any photo to enlarge it. Lake Päijänne is the deepest and (after Saimaa) the second-largest lake in FInland. At its north end is the city of Jyväskylä, the capitol of central Finland. Some 20 km south of the city is the island of Säynätsalo, famous for its civic center (Alvar Aalto, 1951). The town of Säynätsalo occupies essentially the entire island. A few service buildings are scattered about the middle of the island, inside the Parviaisentie ring road, and th...

And the second by Matti Sanaksenaho. One of the advantages of being a student here is greatly reduced museum admissions. For just 10 €, I joined the Finnish National Gallery. Now I can stop in Kiasma. Any time I like. Does Kiasma have a significant site relationship? Not really. The geometry of the plan is based ...

MAISEMAA, RAKENNUSTA, RUOKAA: korvasieni
http://erichenyey.blogspot.com/2007/05/korvasieni.html
MAISEMAA, RAKENNUSTA, RUOKAA. Click on any photo to enlarge it. I'm writing this while waiting for my poisonous mushrooms to cook. Today at Stockmann I found some cartons of fresh korvasieniä. The name means "ear mushrooms"; in English and French these are known as the "false morels." The mushrooms look a bit like oversize morels but are irregularly-shaped, aren't pointed, and don't have hollow stems. I love morels, but these smell even more delicious! 1 They were delicious.
