10 May 2013 · 10:17 am. Twenty-Six Fortnights – 9. For the first of the two ‘May’ posts, here’s a re-recording and a remix. Both date back to the earliest days of 52fs, when I was mostly singing unaccompanied and in a cardboard box (or that’s how it often sounded). Is that rarity, a bona fide. Both The London Waterman. Are from 52 Folk Songs – Violet. These versions are free to download. Filed under 26 Fortnights. 10 April 2013 · 9:28 pm. Twenty-Six Fortnights – 7. This new version is a free download.
FS41: Earl Richard | Fifty-Two Folk Songs

NS21: Sir Richard’s song. Week 41: Earl Richard, Sir Richard’s song →. 17 June 2012 · 8:00 pm. Child 68. This one took me slightly by surprise. “Sir Richard”. Came first this week; having decided on that one, I looked around for a folk song with some sort of thematic or titular connection, and mostly drew a blank. I settled on “Bold Sir Rylas”, before deciding that I really wanted something slightly less tasteless. But what? Tracing where my text came from, verse by verse. Apart from a bit of recorder, t...

Category Archives: folk song. 9 August 2015 · 4:03 pm. Fakesong (Dave Harker, 1985). Hallo again (if you’ve been here before). I’m reviving this blog as a place for occasional thoughts about folk – and, to begin with, a book review. So the idea of a book, written from a left-wing perspective, debunking illusions about English folk song wasn’t anathema to me when I picked up Dave Harker’s 1985 book. Fakesong: The manufacture of British ‘folksong’, 1700 to the present day. Amicus sed major amicus Veritas.

Perry « Oh Good Ale
https://ohgoodale.wordpress.com/perry
Phil's beer blog. Mild, porter and stout. Nothing really wrong with this; deep yellow colour, rich chewy flavour with a nice balance of sour and sweet, 7.4% a.b.v. Not much pear flavour; more like a cider. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing very distinctive either. Cloudy, heavy, sweetish, sparkling and strong. 8211; 7.2% and tastes it. A big perry flavour. Pale, heavy, fruity, surprisingly sweet; the sharpness and the sweetness nearly come apart to give that honeyed-vinegar effect, but not quite. Ve...
Phil « Oh Good Ale

Phil's beer blog. Mild, porter and stout. Session #113 – Two halves for the price of one. 2 July, 2016 – 12:09 am. The other night I spent half an hour each in two local drinking establishments. Here’s what I observed. Two men are sitting outside, looking a bit rough – one with a balding shaved head, the other looking like the oldest Mod in town. Four young men (late 20s? I move on to the Marble Beerhouse. Arriving around 9.35. Earl Grey IPA. (The Double Dobber is a one-off, made using home brew kit ...

This was inspired by "a folk song a day" and similar projects by others involved in folk music. Sunday, August 26, 2012. On the Banks of the Leven. Another Graeme Miles song, once again featuring the river Leven. This and "She Walks Alone" were both taken from his book "Forgotten Songs Remembered" and were both written in 1966. My version is accompanied on a Kala soprano ukulele in D-tuning. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). On the Banks of the LevenAnother Graeme Miles song. A Folk Song a Week.
The big, the bad and the Marble « Oh Good Ale
https://ohgoodale.wordpress.com/2015/04/28/the-big-the-bad-and-the-marble
Phil's beer blog. Mild, porter and stout. Mildly interesting (1) ». The big, the bad and the Marble. Brewing at high strengths isn’t easy. Come to that, brewing. Of the celebrated De Garre tripel – as if somebody’s brewed a strong beer and then poured a glass of tequila into it. Alcoholic heat, alcoholic oiliness, even alcohol flavour – these aren’t things you want to be tasting in a beer. It’s like that; that’s the difference. Then there was Magic Rock. I’ve never been crazy about Cannonball. I thought ...
Occasional Folk Songs
http://tootlingeoff.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-unquiet-grave-child-78-this-song-is.html
This was inspired by "a folk song a day" and similar projects by others involved in folk music. Tuesday, November 6, 2012. This song is one of the Child Balla ds . Although many have claimed that the origins of the ballad are a ncient, no evidence of t he existence of the song before 1800. Leaving all this aside, this is a great song and the theme of warning against excessive grief which is how I see the song is a timeless one. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Occasional Folk Songs: November 2011

This was inspired by "a folk song a day" and similar projects by others involved in folk music. Sunday, November 27, 2011. I've not posted for a while. Here's a song about poaching and transportation. An article in Mustrad. Discusses ballads relating to transportation to Van Diemen's *. Note: Van Diemen's land is the correct spelling for the name of the colony (later Tasmania) but the ballads nearly all spell it Van Dieman's land. Friday, November 4, 2011. Child 78, Roud 51). There have been many recordi...
