This did nothing to improve our fitness for the road ahead, a road famed for its huge mountain climbs, and which had been closed until the late 90s due to guerilla activity in the area. The Bicycle Diaries", "Two Idiots Abroad", "Adventure in the Andes", "Due North" - We came up with plenty of possible names for our trip so why did we settle for 54degrees? Our finishing point (the Equator) by definition lies at 0 ˚, meaning our total "distance" travelled will be 54degrees. So, that was that - I thought it was clever, Kate thought I was a nerd. A journey from the end of the world to the equator. Wednesday, 20 July 2011. At $2 it is a bargain though. After warming up we located a hotel ($10), and along with it a hot shower. The hotel was spotlessly clean, and with one look at us, the owner insisted we leave our bags downstairs or wash them first! Lack of pictures was a theme for the first few days as it was generally so wet that we didnt get the camera out. We did however get this one which pretty much sums it up. We felt a lot like this.
