May 15, 2015. Wheat Hay for Goats. Sometimes I feel caught between a rock and a hard place. Dan's and my goal is to grow as much of our our food as we can, for both us and our animals. All too often I feel no closer to obtaining that goal than I did five years ago. Oh, we've made huge progress in many areas, but one remains elusive - growing grain. 5 Acres & A Dream: Master Plan

http://www.5acresandadream.com/p/master-plan.html

Our homestead master plan is a key part of our homestead planning. It is a diagram of how we hope our homestead will look some day. It maps out all the various elements of our homestead: house, gardens, paddocks, outbuildings, etc. and gives us a visual tool from which to discuss, brainstorm, prioritize, and plan what we hope to accomplish next. Our most recent revision was May 2016. Our current Master Plan. Click for enlarged image. Copies of 2009 - 2012 master plans are available in. Thats exciting&#46...

5 Acres & A Dream: 15b0513

http://www.5acresandadream.com/2015/02/15b0513.html

February 6, 2015. I have not blogged about cheese making in a long time. This is mostly because I didn't make any hard cheeses this past summer, I focused mostly on mozzarella. The reasons for that was 1) we had all twins and triplets which meant more milk going to kids, and 2) of my 19 previous cheeses, only a couple had been okay. I was considering giving up on hard cheeses. I made myself a grilled cheese sandwich and was pleasantly surprised. This cheese was very good. If you're interested in that.

5 Acres & A Dream: Second Hive Check

http://www.5acresandadream.com/2015/05/second-hive-check.html

May 12, 2015. Two of my questions as a novice Warré beekeeper were how long to feed my hive of package bees, and when to add more hive boxes. Honeybees in my hive top feeder. In his video tutorial, " About Hivetop Feeders. Chris Harvey of The Warré Store. Where I purchased my feeder) says to feed them until the first hive box is entirely filled with comb. In The Backyard Beekeeper. If you look closely at the bees I've arrowed, you'll see scales. Of wax being secreted from glands on their abdomens. I did ...

5 Acres & A Dream: The Question of Self-Sufficiency

http://www.5acresandadream.com/2015/05/the-question-of-self-sufficiency.html

May 5, 2015. The Question of Self-Sufficiency. Not too long ago we had an interesting discussion about the term sustainable. I'm interested in your opinions on something else, although my questions might not be what you'd assume. Let me use an example to explain. When I used to homeschool, the predictable question by non-homeschoolers was, "What about socialization? Why do folks assume self-sufficiency refers to a social condition, when in fact it refers to an economic condition? It does take courage and...

Blog on Bottom: Local eagle

http://blogonbottom.blogspot.com/2013/02/local-eagle.html

Saturday, February 23, 2013. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Gil R Stormont "History of Gibson County, Indiana" 1914. Why do we blog so much? We've always kept a journal, but to read the journal meant that you had to be on a certain computer. In September, 2009, we began using this blog so that friends and family can read it too. The best part though, is that at the end of the year, we can have a book made of the year's posts and the kids will appreciate it (finally) when they are our age!

Be joyful though you have considered all the facts. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. July 25, 2016. Our town has instigated a partial watering ban (irrigate between 7 pm and 7 am, every other day), which I suspect will soon become a full ban. The farm three miles from us, from which we get our CSA box, is postponing further plantings until their irrigation ponds and brooks have been replenished. That means we may not get fall produce from them. Rain dance, anyone? Seven Hens, Seven Eggs.

What Pigs Don't Know: Introducing...Zorro

http://pigsdontknow.blogspot.com/2012/01/introducingzorro.html

Local Eggs for Sale. Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Let me preface this post by saying we are not. Cat people. Never have been, and I dare say never will be. Seeing as cats and dogs are neck and neck in the popularity polls, I'm probably committing blog suicide by even hinting at the fact that I am not overly enamored by felines. I'm not against cats, per se. I am just a bigger fan of the unconditional love of a dog. Now that I have that off my chest. Care to guess whose reflection is on our dishwasher?
