APE SHALL NOT KILL APE: August 2013
http://apeshall.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 28, 2013. Somehow I've never posted pictures of this Golden Age remnant before now. The Gardiner-Tyler House. Was built in 1837 (according to an article in the NY Times. Paywall}). I figure it's a nice way to try to get back to posting. I've been occupied with my swords and sorcery blog and getting things done around the house. I'd like to see this blog moving along again so here's hoping. From 1868 to 1874, Juliana Tyler. The widow of President John Tyler. Wednesday, August 28, 2013.

Thursday, March 27, 2014. Snug Harbor Randall Memorial Church. Interior images showing the apse and altar. The church was located in the bottom left of the lower picture, around where the cars are parked. One of the things I only really thought about a few years ago was that I never really understood what Snug Harbor is supposed to look like. The location of the trees were deliberately planned and not just scattered around randomly. All the forested section along Henderson Avenue? Thursday, March 27, 2014.

Wednesday, May 29, 2013. Guess Something Right and Win a Prize! That's my shelf of Staten Island history books. It's not perfect but I'm pretty proud of it. The highlight is the complete set of Leng and Davis. Another gem is "Staten Island 1524 - 1898". By Henry G. Steinmeyer. Now here's the thing. I've got two copies: one good one and one worn one. So I'm giving the worn one away to one lucky winner! All you have to do is guess correctly where this statue is. I mean it's an astronaut in Zero-G! History ...
APE SHALL NOT KILL APE: Let It Begin! - Stapleton Projects Project Part One - Lost Stapleton
http://apeshall.blogspot.com/2015/02/let-it-begin-part-one-lost-stapleton.html
Tuesday, February 03, 2015. Stapleton Projects Project Part One - Lost Stapleton. I mentioned on Facebook in the group North Shore Staten Island Stuff about my hope of recreating the neighborhoods lost to the construction of the various NYCHA housing projects across the North Shore in the early sixties. Because it's my home, because I'm getting reinvolved in community affairs, I'm starting with Stapleton. Tompkins Street btw Patten (Custer) and Clarker. Make sure you click on the pictures to enlarge them).
APE SHALL NOT KILL APE: July 2013
http://apeshall.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 20, 2013. In the past I made a couple of posts. About Detroit and three years ago the luminous Mrs. V and I took a detour through the city on our way to Glacier National Park. There's really no way to convey the vast devastation of the place but here's a few pictures anyway. Mark Twain Public Library. This beautiful building, though money was explicitly raised to renovate it, was demolished in 2011. Saturday, July 20, 2013. Links to this post. Sunday, July 14, 2013. Sunday, July 14, 2013.
APE SHALL NOT KILL APE: June 2013

Sunday, June 16, 2013. Part Two - Richmond County Savings Bank. Standing at the corner of Castleton Avenue and Taylor Street, this 1930 picture gives us so much more than just a great shot of the Richmond County Savings Bank. There are several little details worth examining. In the window at the center left of the picture is a sign advertising the law offices of Francis F. Leman. I couldn't find much information about him, but in 1920. From the New York Times - October 21, 1886. The fact that such an imp...

Tuesday, July 15, 2014. PS 17 Hamilton Park - Burned and Gone. PS 17, a fairly standard looking school once stood on the heights overlooking York and Jersey Streets. The bit of woods visible in the right of the picture, behind the school, represent the edge of The Cedars. Businessman Shipley Jones' estate. The school burned down in 1977 and Parks began the process of acquiring the land from the Board of Education in order to build what's now called Skyline Park. Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Thursday, January 09, 2014. Terrible Crime in Port Richmond - 1862. November 21, 1862. November 23, 1862. November 26, 1862. February 22, 1863. I wish there were more detail about the case. I'd like to know where the lager-bier saloon was and where poor Alabamus' body was found. Port Richmond in 1862 was a pretty small town. Where was there a lager-bier saloon that everybody didn't know about it already? A century and a half after the fact, are there any descendants of the Harrison family? 5 Boros: A His...

Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Richmond Terrace and Heberton Avenue - March, 1927. It's a little discombobulating to realize streets I have grown up on and lived on for nearly fifty years were drastically different once. Nothing in a city stays the same for long. Populations change and grow. Technologies advance and require different infrastructures. I used to get upset about the physical changes on the Island, but now I've come to understand they've always happened and will continue to forever. Welcome to The ...
