78 Degrees South

Friday, February 2, 2007. The field season has officially come to a close. We closed out F6 camp and flew back to McMurdo a couple days ago. It was sad to fly over the valley for the last time. I keep thinking how lucky I am to have spent so much time in a starkly beautiful place like the Dry Valleys. Our helicopter flight back to McMurdo was quite eventful! A pod of orcas spy-hopping. Weddell seals lounging on the edge of an icebreaker ship channel. Tuesday, January 23, 2007. Sunday, January 14, 2007.

78 Degrees South: Penguins

http://78degreessouth.blogspot.com/2007/01/penguins.html

Thursday, January 4, 2007. Yesterday was the best day and the saddest day all in one. Pete, Lee and I were just getting our day started and it was gorgeous weather! The morning was pretty warm and a few streams started flowing, so we had a lot in our plans. As we turned to go down the lake, I noticed that what I thought to be a shimmery mirage on the ice was actually a little penguin! How big were they? It's hard to tell from your pictures. Maybe they'll find their way. Happy New Year, btw :). They were ...

78 Degrees South: Holidays

http://78degreessouth.blogspot.com/2006/12/at-large-holidays-like-thanksgiving-and.html

Monday, December 25, 2006. At large holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, most of the people working in the Dry Valleys gather at the central field camp, Lake Hoare. The camp manager Rae plans elaborate meals and activities. For Thanksgiving this year, we had a full dinner- better than most have at home! There were 8 pies for dessert. For Christmas/Hannukah/Solstice Rae cooked roast beef, baked veggies, mashed potatoes, asparagus, baked pumpkin and bread pudding. Yes, but it was steamed, not baked.

78 Degrees South: Helicopters

http://78degreessouth.blogspot.com/2006/12/helicopters.html

Tuesday, December 19, 2006. View of the Commonwealth Glacier from an A-Star helicopter's front seat. Offloading a Bell-212 when the rotors are turning. The instrument panel in an A-Star. This was the cause of the most recent (2003) helicopter crash in the Antarctic. Pilot Marco in an A-Star helicopter delivering a sling load to F6 camp. How tall is that glacier? And why are the sides like that? Non-science speak, please). December 24, 2006 at 2:00:00 PM GMT 13. Distances and heights are difficult for me ...

78 Degrees South: Penguin Update

http://78degreessouth.blogspot.com/2007/01/penguin-update.html

Monday, January 8, 2007. That's good news, I think. Go little guys, go! Do you ever see other animals - if not up close, when you're up in the helicopters? I'm looking forward to a gigantic collection of pictures when you get back. You'd better deliver. Maybe we'll throw a slideshow party for you. ;). January 9, 2007 at 4:43:00 AM GMT 13. Definitely will put together a slideshow if you'll watch! January 10, 2007 at 10:32:00 PM GMT 13. November 12, 2008 at 5:27:00 PM GMT 13. View my complete profile.

Real Environment: ‘Wildlife-friendly farming’ versus ‘Land sparing’

http://realenvironment.blogspot.com/2007/01/wildlife-friendly-farming-versus-land.html

Economic and scientific investigations of environmental issues. Friday, January 26, 2007. 8216;Wildlife-friendly farming’ versus ‘Land sparing’. I recently came across a two year old paper. By four biologists published in the journal Science. Brazenly titled “Farming and the Fate of Wild Nature,” the authors less than subtlety suggest that there is a lot at stake. There is! Two general strategies have been proposed to mitigate the adverse affects of agriculture:. The authors’ primary purpose with t...

Economic and scientific investigations of environmental issues. Thursday, February 15, 2007. Skepticism and Climate Change. Climate change skeptics contend that we do not have enough evidence to authorize significant policy changes. In taking a position of ignorance, they assume 1) that we do have enough evidence to justify not making significant changes and 2) that current policies are optimal, such that adopting policies targeted at mitigating climate change could only cause harm. Glad I found your blo...

Real Environment: Brief comment on the value of nature

http://realenvironment.blogspot.com/2007/03/brief-comment-on-value-of-nature.html

Economic and scientific investigations of environmental issues. Friday, March 23, 2007. Brief comment on the value of nature. A commentator on Ecolog (an ecology list-serv to which I subscribe) had this to say:. I say everything should have equal value and that value is priceless.". I emailed him a response, which I have copied below as it pertains to the subject of this blog:. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Brief comment on the value of nature.

Economic and scientific investigations of environmental issues. Monday, October 30, 2006. Breaking News: Bush Administration Ignores Science! Excuse the titular sarcasm. Anyway, I came across yet another report. In the Washington Post. Monday, October 23, 2006. The Good, the Bad, and the Confounding: Biological Response to Climate Change. First, the good news, sort of. A recent paper. Examined a well-characterized species of fruit fly, Drosophila subobscura. Like many other small organisms, is special in...

Economic and scientific investigations of environmental issues. Friday, November 17, 2006. Though I have read numerous book reviews, having never written a book one, I do not have a good sense of how to compose them. I will remedy that deficiency with a review of Freakonomics. By University of Chicago economist Steven D. Levitt. And journalist Stephan J. Dubner. I came to Freakonomics. Does not invite casual readership. The conventional view serves to protect us from the painful job of thinking.". Is mor...

Economic and scientific investigations of environmental issues. Thursday, December 28, 2006. Oil and the Trade Deficit. In an earlier post.
