Eber Culver, Architect of the Herdic Hotel

Born on September 6, 1824 in Auburn, N.Y., Eber Culver was one of Williamsport's foremost architects. Culver was commissioned by Peter Herdic to design his first class Herdic Hotel back in 1864, and in addition to the hotel, his architectural designs can be seen all over the city. His contributions to Williamsport include:. GRIT building (original part). The Weightman Block (Fourth and Campbell Streets). First Baptist Church (original building). Trinity Episcopal Church (supervising architect).

Peter Herdic did more for the city of Williamsport than just build the Herdic Hotel, in fact, he did more for the advancement of the city than any other single individual before or after his time. He gave Williamsport its first real start on its road to prosperity . The Herdic House Hotel. The structure itself was a square brick building with outside dimensions of 156 feet each way and the entrance was reached by an open arch. The inside of the building was made of durable white pine while the lobby and halls were lined with marble tile from the Mosquito Valley and the rooms were sumptuously furnished with accommodations for 700 guests.
