A Blog of One's Own

A Blog of One's Own. A Writer on Writing, the World, Random Reflections and Rants. Thursday, 7 May 2015. Pocket Poems for Poetry Day. Pocket poems as a venture have been doing the rounds for a while in America. And I just love the idea of them. They make poetry so accessible. And personal. And keepsake-able. But I fantasize about the day when poems are handed out as leaflets in the street to passers-by. Imagine! Perhaps poetry's greatest attribute and side-effect. Try it :). Links to this post. A Blog of One's Own. A Writer on Writing, the World, Random Reflections and Rants. Saturday, 22 March 2014. For the Young Who Want to Write. I came across this poem today and just have to share it here:. For the Young Who Want To - Marge Piercy. Talent is what they say. You have after the novel. Is published and favorably. Reviewed. Beforehand what. You have is a tedious. Delusion, a hobby like knitting. Work is what you have done. After the play is produced. And the audience claps. Out and get a job.

A Blog of One's Own. A Writer on Writing, the World, Random Reflections and Rants. Thursday, 19 March 2015. Can Writers Read Too Much? As an insatiable reader I would automatically answer the question the title of this post poses with a vehement No. But as a writer, I'm beginning to wonder if there is such a thing as reading too much. Like a see-saw, will one go down if the other goes up? It's all about achieving balance. And recently my scales have been off (by a truckload of books). To read. All wr...

There is no losing in writing, it will make your toes laugh as you sleep. it will make you stride like a tiger.'. I love this line especially from Bukowski's declaration. 'There is no losing in writing. For more of Bukowski's tough-guy hard-earned writerly wisdom, click on his name in the Labels below this post. He has a lot to say on the craft and separati...

A Blog of One's Own. A Writer on Writing, the World, Random Reflections and Rants. Thursday, 30 October 2014. The Boo in Books: Storytelling Magic. Last night I attended a stage production of one of my favourite seasonal reads, Bram Stoker's Dracula,. In the form of Jonathan Harker and Dracula. Tour-de-force re-enactment of the classic novel. Although the production was minimal, the execution was brilliant. I'm a nervous wreck! A testament to the story's (and our storyteller's) captivating power. The who...

A Poem A Day:. Indulging my love of poetry by posting a poem a day, every day. to inspire, delight and enlighten! Thursday, 6 August 2015. When You Go Away. I was struck by a line in this poem: 'and that my words are the garment of what I shall never be.'. There is sorrow here, but being by WS Mervin, it so beautifully and subtly rendered. When You Go Away - WS Mervin. When you go away the wind clicks around to the north. The painters work all day but at sundown the paint falls. Showing the black walls.

A Poem A Day:. Indulging my love of poetry by posting a poem a day, every day. to inspire, delight and enlighten! Tuesday, 11 August 2015. You never know when or where Death will strike. Fact. Truth, uncompromising. When it will come all of a sudden - 'the instant hand of Death/always ready to burst forth/from the sleeve of his voluminous cloak. As Billy Collins so deftly demonstrates here in this poem. Picnic, Lightning - Billy Collins. It is possible to be struck by a meteor. Or a single-engine plane.

Today's prompt is to tell a story, backwards. Life of a Leaf. A leaf falls from a tree. A copper goodbye, dipped in ochre light. Green, a memory now, veined in its heart. Crinkled and curled at the first feel of cold,. Head wilts, bows to teardrop pose. Summer a dream, a frond-filled fantasia,. A Poem A Day.

Day 25: Stolen Lines. Excuse my absence, it's been a tough few weeks unfortunately in which a crisis has ousted poetry for a more pressing practicality. But Onwards. For poetry is always a salve. Maybe April is the cruelest. Breeding love out of the deadlands,. Mixing memory with regret, new buds. A Poem A Day.
