Sunday, June 6, 2010. Horoscopes Monkey Trial: Your week 7 - 13 June 2010. 7 - 13 JUNE 2010. You will find it difficult to sleep without the aid of a lullaby. Hold your breath until you turn blue this week. Then join the Blue Man Group. The Taurus with a thirst for knowledge can expect humidity and a high of 25 degrees on Wednesday. Untold horrors will rain down upon all those who misspell the word 'barbecue'. Try to budget yourself this week. Don't spend too much money on peanut butter or raisins...

Poll Vaulting: Canada: Un-Cult of Un-Personality
http://pollvaulting.blogspot.com/2010/05/canada-un-cult-of-un-personality.html
Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Canada: Un-Cult of Un-Personality. Image by John Hansen. Measurable, and I think you could make some good arguments that it's not, support for Michael Ignatieff is abysmal. The man is just not very popular - not even within his own party. I have an EKOS poll. That's a few weeks old that tells much the same story - but check out the partisan numbers:. Nationwide: 43% approve, 26% disapprove, 31% DK/NR. NDP: 69% approve, 11% disapprove, 20% DK/NR. The third question is something on...

Poll Vaulting: February 2011
http://pollvaulting.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 10, 2011. A seventh: the Reform party comtended the 1988 election, but as a relatively minor party that took no seats. I don't include the 1988 election, because it ruins the narrative: one of the PC imploding spectacularly and two parties being born as a result, one of which is called Reform. Canadian electoral history is divided into pre-1993 and post-1993. So 1988 is 'old-school'. Irrelevant. If this party just didn't exist, where would the Albertan vote go? High margins of victory,...

A Proper Blog: The magazine rack: March 1975
http://a-proper-blog.blogspot.com/2010/04/magazine-rack-march-1975.html
Monday, April 19, 2010. The magazine rack: March 1975. I can't take much credit for this entry, really. It's my reaction to finding coverbrowser.com. A site that's not overly attractive in appearance but is an amazing inventory of comic and magazine covers. They claim to have almost half a million covers. I looked at some of the comics, but it seems that comics don't tend to put dates on the covers. Months, maybe, but not years. So I scrapped the comics. Was in a shouting mood, declaiming 'American Jews ...

Better as a Single: Better as a Single: "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood
http://betterasasingle.blogspot.com/2010/01/better-as-single-welcome-to.html
Friday, January 8, 2010. Better as a Single: "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. It's difficult to imagine a phenomenon so large leaving so little legacy. But from the perspective of 2010, it's all but impossible to imagine just how large. To release a double album as their début. It sold over a million on pre-release. In the UK alone. They had their own video game. Even their t-shirts. Were social signifiers. And then? What did they leave behind? Welcome to the Pleasuredome.

Poll Vaulting: Toronto: A Nascent Cycle
http://pollvaulting.blogspot.com/2010/10/toronto-nascent-cycle.html
Saturday, October 30, 2010. Toronto: A Nascent Cycle. After all, how can you argue with this map, from the Toronto Star? I think it's correct to frame this election as downtown vs. suburbs. Additionally, it was also about the role of government, about the power of populism, and to a limited extent about the traditional divisions of left, centre and right. It was. Seem to be a common thread among them. It's not accurate, however, to say merely ' that's. This is admittedly not quite a map of 'old Toronto v...

Poll Vaulting: Canada: The Provincial Scene, part 1
http://pollvaulting.blogspot.com/2010/06/canada-provincial-scene-part-1.html
Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Canada: The Provincial Scene, part 1. Some notes on how things are looking at the polls province by province. I'll do a quick rundown of provincial polls across the country, from east to west, but I'll do it in two parts (I know, I know, I've said that before.). So to start with, I'm looking at the Atlantic provinces and Québec. Tune in, er, tomorrow-ish for the other six party-based sub-national entities. Related articles by Zemanta. NB voters wary of all political parties: poll.
