Sans le Nom: The Word of the Day
http://sanslenom.blogspot.com/2013/12/december-16.html
Saturday, December 14, 2013. The Word of the Day. Today is my birthday. I turn 46 officially at 11:04 pm, which is uncharacteristic because that's way past my bedtime. Last year I made a Facebook goof and threw a lavish party. This year I'm spending a little less. My present to myself is this. A chance to sit down in a cafe on President Clinton Avenue and write for myself. I'll say, "Mom, I think I was born on a full stomach.". And I'll cry a little bit as she tells me she loves me and hangs up the phone.

Sans le Nom: Beautiful Dragons
http://sanslenom.blogspot.com/2014/12/beautiful-dragons.html
Tuesday, December 16, 2014. The perception of what is small is the secret of clear. Sightedness; the guarding of what is soft and tender is the secret. Of strength. - Lao Tzu. When I was very young, my mom read to me every night, and when I started first grade, she taught me to read. In essence, she gave me the gifts of life and literacy, yet while I have certainly enjoyed the former to its fullest (thanks, Mom! I'm a little slow sometimes. And Hansel and Gretel were arrested for burglary and capital mur...

Sans le Nom: February 2015
http://sanslenom.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Dead in D.C. It's a little-known fact (or maybe a well-known one) that a lot of people die on the toilet. Elvis Presley being, possibly, one of the most famous examples. I know this because I am a dry cleaner's daughter and was intrigued by an article in the New Yorker. At any rate, I went to Washington, D.C. for a conference on Tuesday. What could it be? Yeah, flights cancelled. And then I sat back on the cool marble floor (the hotel is next door to the White House, what do y...

Sans le Nom: Lessons I Learned from Family and Friends #1: The Wedding Cake
http://sanslenom.blogspot.com/2015/06/lessons-i-learned-from-family-and.html
Tuesday, June 2, 2015. Lessons I Learned from Family and Friends #1: The Wedding Cake. Of course, that was the whole point of the exercise: be uncomfortable until you find a place of comfort with the group you will spend this time with, recognize each as a person and not as somehow a representative of a color or a belief or a generation or a place. So my friend told me a story. But then she had to transport the finished cake back to the un-airconditioned farmhouse over several miles of dirt road. So from...

Sans le Nom: August 2012
http://sanslenom.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 1, 2012. Going out of Business. F-Bomb Alert: My mom should not read this post (she will anyway). My teaching career is officially, finally, and irrevocably over. After 19 years in the biz, I've had enough. A few months ago, a friend of mine said, "You know, there are problems at every job; I just need a different set of problems." And I guess I kind of took her statement into my own heart. I didn't actually sign up for a teaching career. Like most things in my life, it fell into my...

Timothy is a Bookspaz: November 2008
http://bookspaz.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Timothy is a Bookspaz. Some people think I'm hiding. It's rumored that I've died. But I'm alive and well in Tennessee. Monday, November 24, 2008. It's been so hard to keep with with the ol' blog since school started. Teaching, studenting, social chairing, reading, writing, cooking, cleaning, whew. All these necessary distractions make Mr. Sisk a bad blogger. 3 My students, bless their hearts. I am sincerely grateful for each and every one of them. They have made me kinder, stronger, better. 5 Six months,...

Timothy is a Bookspaz: Snowball Effects
http://bookspaz.blogspot.com/2009/02/snowball-effects.html
Timothy is a Bookspaz. Some people think I'm hiding. It's rumored that I've died. But I'm alive and well in Tennessee. Monday, February 2, 2009. It snowed in Knoxville today. Snow fell harder than I'd ever seen it fall before, and I was not scared. I'm usually irrationally afraid of inclement weather, but I think I've gotten to the point where snow doesn't bother me so much. Rain, on the other hand. I'd rather stay home all day than drive in any amount of drizzle. He's 23 and was at a party. Smoking ...
