AV is not PR - vote no on 5 May: February 2011
http://avisnotpr.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, 27 February 2011. WHAT UTTERLY USELESS CAMPAIGNS. Has there ever been anything quite as dispiritingly unmotivating as the current AV referendum campaign? I wasn't expecting a great deal from it, but week two has been so dead even I've barely noticed it. Has continued its idiotic Taxpayers' Alliance bollocks about how much a change in the voting system would cost. And Yes to Fairer Votes. At this rate, I'd be surprised if turnout is 30 per cent. http://avisnotpr.blogspot.com/2011/05/av-post-mortem-begins.html
Thursday, 12 May 2011. AV: THE POST MORTEM BEGINS. Peter Facey, director of Unlock Democracy, the successor organisation to Charter 88 and one of the pro-PR organisations that most enthusiastically embraced the "yes" campaign, has an interesting piece here. Note: only a member of this blog may post a comment. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). There is a UK-wide referendum on 5 May on the voting system for elections to the House of Commons. VOTE NO FOR PR. FIRST PAST THE POST. The main problem with firs...

AV is not PR - vote no on 5 May: AV IS DEAD: LONG LIVE PR!
http://avisnotpr.blogspot.com/2011/05/av-is-dead-long-live-pr.html
Thursday, 12 May 2011. AV IS DEAD: LONG LIVE PR! Column, 13 May 2011. Last week's defeat for the “yes” campaign in the alternative vote referendum was richly deserved. The “yes” campaign failed miserably to put across its case for changing the electoral system for the House of Commons from first past the post to preferential voting. Its efforts were risible from the start, when its launch was fronted by a comic and an actor, and went downhill from there. But that was it. The Independent. Filled in a few ...

AV is not PR - vote no on 5 May: IT WAS 'AV IS NOT PR' WOT WON IT
http://avisnotpr.blogspot.com/2011/05/it-was-av-is-not-pr-wot-won-it.html
Saturday, 7 May 2011. IT WAS 'AV IS NOT PR' WOT WON IT. What the result does not. More on this next week. Note: only a member of this blog may post a comment. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). There is a UK-wide referendum on 5 May on the voting system for elections to the House of Commons. There will be no chance to choose a proportional system – so supporters of PR should vote no. VOTE NO FOR PR. FIRST PAST THE POST. The last UK general election was not a particularly bad one for proportionality....

AV is not PR - vote no on 5 May: REFERENDUM WAS A MISSED OPPORTUNITY
http://avisnotpr.blogspot.com/2011/05/referendum-was-missed-opportunity.html
Tuesday, 17 May 2011. REFERENDUM WAS A MISSED OPPORTUNITY. I just read your article in Tribune. About the alternative vote referendum. I voted "yes", and I think, as a PR supporter since forever and a day, that you are probably profoundly wrong, strategically, about this – I say probably because, at the end of the day, who really knows? From the 1980s, with which I have always strongly disagreed). A "miserable little compromise" indeed …. If you look at the election results, it does seem to bear this out...

AV is not PR - vote no on 5 May: July 2010
http://avisnotpr.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, 8 July 2010. NOT SO GOOD FOR GREENS. Longstanding Green activist Derek Wall thinks that the alternative vote is a means of keeping Greens out of parliament. Links to this post. Wednesday, 7 July 2010. IF ONLY AV IS ON OFFER, SPOIL YOUR VOTE. Paul Anderson, Tribune. Column, 6 July 2010. Why should your second choice have the same weight as my first choice? The government's proposed question for the referendum on the voting system has been released:. Put that way, I'll withdraw my plea for suppor...

AV is not PR - vote no on 5 May: February 2010
http://avisnotpr.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, 20 February 2010. CAMPAIGN FOR WHAT YOU REALLY WANT. Advocates of proportional representation have been divided over their response to Gordon Brown's promise of a referendum on the alternative vote – with some, among them the Electoral Reform Society, seeing it as a great opportunity, and some extremely sceptical. The excellent Open Democracy website. Has carried a telling exchange ( start here. Between Stuart Weir, former editor of New Socialist. And the New Statesman. 2 The emphasis on the si...

AV is not PR - vote no on 5 May: January 2010
http://avisnotpr.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, 23 January 2010. LABOUR IS TOO LATE ON VOTING REFORM. Paul Anderson, Tribune. Column, 22 January 2010. Reforming the voting system is an anorak thing most of the time – but every now and again it breaks out of the closet, as it has in the past few months. I’ve been an anorak on electoral reform for getting on for 25 years, but I’m afraid I’ve found it a bit difficult to get worked up about it this time round. On the other hand, it’s a bit late for Labour to be changing the voting system&#...

AV is not PR - vote no on 5 May: April 2005
http://avisnotpr.blogspot.com/2005_04_01_archive.html
Saturday, 16 April 2005. PR BACK ON THE AGENDA? Paul Anderson, Gauche blog, 15 April 2005. Tom Baldwin and Greg Hurst report in the Times. Today that the government has admitted secretly setting up a review of the first-past-the-post electoral system for the House of Commons. They go on rather about how the Lib Dems are miffed about not having been informed – but the very fact that Labour is thinking again about electoral reform is highly significant. Links to this post.
