Sh*t my brain says and forgets about. My Favorite Screenshot Tool – SnagIt. November 29, 2015. November 29, 2015. I’ve been using Techsmith’s SnagIt. For years for taking screenshots. It started as a Windows-only product but then a Mac version came out. It’s extremely simple to use and has most everything I want for a quick image including cropping, border effects, transparency, and annotations like arrows and text. What’s your favorite screenshot and annotation tool? June 23, 2015. June 23, 2015. You ca...

Sh*t my brain says and forgets about. Tater Tots Through Time. December 23, 2015. November 25, 2016. Every year at the Automattic Grand Meetup the entire company gets together in one place for a little over a week to work and have fun. Part of that meetup requires everyone to give a four minute flash talk on any subject. This year my coworker Carolyn Sonnek and I decided to team up on our flash talk. Musings on fascinating things. Adapting to the Kinesis keyboard. April 27, 2016. February 3, 2017. I ordered a Kinesis keyboard on joining Automattic, figuring that I would try to kick the new year off taking ergonomics seriously. It feels like I have so far gone through two periods of learning, and still getting with respect to matching the rate of touch typing on Mac laptop keyboard. April 28, 2013. February 3, 2017. Musings on fascinating things. April 28, 2013. February 3, 2017. I suspect that Clojure, event though acknowledge to be the latest incarnation of the common lisp family of languages, is less powerful than Common Lisp. I suspect that this has a lot to do with macro processing, the fact that it is a JVM language. Is it worth pursuing to any degree? How would one go about firming such a claim, and to whom would it matter? Writing for 10 minutes a day. Adapting to the Kinesis keyboard. Enter your comment here.

Musings on fascinating things. Remembering Tupac with (Neuro) Style. January 3, 2017. So I thought I would take the inaugural post on charlesearl.blog to commemorate the great dearly departed Tupac while also dipping my foot into Deep Learning Neural Style Transfer. Honoring you with style. Style transfer[1] is the AI that powers apps like Pikazo. 8212; it extracts the style in from one image then re-images a second image in that style to create a third novel image. Musings on fascinating things. September 22, 2016. February 3, 2017. Six years ago, I was trying to get a proposal off and my wife hooked me up with a few days of retreat time at a place called Banning Mills. It’s about an hour and half from Atlanta, but in many ways, rural Georgia has always seemed a world away. Nevertheless, I was impressed by the beauty of the surrounding area. It claims a famous zip-line. And nearby there are exquisite views of the Chattahoochee that are priceless for their serenity.

Musings on fascinating things. November 19, 2016. February 3, 2017. It seems that my last post set sparked a lot of questions in my mind about the Civil War era, it’s impact on my family, the repercussions upon Georgia, and how it is still being grappled with to this day. There is a lot that I am still unpacking but I’ll start simple. For some reason I have been fascinated by Ulysses S. Grant. I encountered a biography, Grant. Came out. Prescient. I vowed to complete this one end to end. As t...The degre...

Musings on fascinating things. Books on a plane. January 10, 2017. February 3, 2017. Next week, the team I am on at Automattic is meeting up in Tel-Aviv to attend the NetSci X. And then the magic of the unexpected. I am looking forward to experiencing and blogging about those adventures. I want to take time to discuss one of my favorite things to do on long plane rides — reading books that I have long had on my list and rarely get the chance to dive into. My colleague has hooked it up! Blood at the Root.

The Dangling Pointer – Sh*t my brain says and forgets about
Sh*t my brain says and forgets about. It’s Funny What Kids Will Remember. January 15, 2017. Back in the mid 1980s there was a kids’ TV Game Show called “Double Dare” on the Nickelodeon channel. We didn’t have cable TV but at some point it started to air on regular television. Our local TV station even aired an episode early in the morning before school at 6:30am. Everyone who watched the show did it for that sixty glorious seconds of slime, goo, and gunk. Cameo on The More Than Just Code Podcast. You can...

5:53 pm 19 May 2013. Words are sensuous creatures, waiting to be rolled off tongues, sung in harmonies, whispered into ears. And the books that contain the words beg to be touched, opened, fingered. They wait, those handsome volumes with their sleek bindings and smooth covers, on bookshop shelves and in library stacks, to disseminate their pleasure if one would just open.".
