Feminism, Ethiopian men, and the patriarchy | Abeba Birhane

A little bit of Everything. Cognitive Science. Ethiopia. Ireland. Feminism, Ethiopian men, and the patriarchy. I recently got into some Twitter exchanges regarding Ethiopian feminism. Seeing a bunch of men telling women that they can’t be both religious and feminists despite those women arguing otherwise, started it. Let me clarify things in a bit more detail here. Not only are you mistaken, as there are plenty of remarkable Muslim feminists. That might be because it has been the accepted norm (thanks to...

A little bit of Everything. Cognitive Science. Ethiopia. Ireland. It works, bitches! This form of knowledge is often presented in sharp contrast with knowledge that is dogmatic and ideological as if they are neatly separable. Those who are reasonable and educated are seen as free from ideologies and dogmas. Those that attempt to dispute this so called fact are often portrayed as anti-science. Typically snarled at Don’t take it personal it’s science, can’t argue with the facts . Don’t get me wrong! Pingba...

A little bit of Everything. Cognitive Science. Ethiopia. Ireland. Bakhtin, Merleau-Ponty, and the Cartesian subject. To what extent are the modernist conceptions of the subject Cartesian? What of our sciences, especially the human sciences and the knowledge that emerges from them? And how can we overcome these lingering Cartesian residues? Gardiner in ”The incomparable monster of solipsism’: Bakhtin and Merleau-Ponty’. And Martian c-fibres often take centre stage, illustrates this further. June 22, 2016.

A little bit of Everything. Cognitive Science. Ethiopia. Ireland. What makes me, me? What makes me like coffee over tea? Why do some people engage in criminal activities? What is it that makes some people a rapist? What are the sources of bullying behaviour? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could find simple explanations for such complex questions? Posted in Cognitive Science. December 12, 2015. By The Möbius Stripper. Western philosophy has historically seen only what its illusions permitted it to see.

Maria Kasmirli's website. Never compare one student’s test score to another’s. Always measure a child’s progress against her past performance. There will always be a better reader, mathematician, or baseball player. Our goal is to help each student become as special as she can be as an individual–not to be more special than the kid sitting next to her. Maria Kasmirli's website. Laquo; Brush up your peopleship! I’ve just been reading this piece on European Schools. By Vincent Manancourt, and I thought I’d offer some reflections. Vincent explains that he usually says he’s from Luxembourg, since that’s where he was brought up and lives, but that he doesn’t really believe it. He’s actually English, and just lives in Luxembourg, yet he’s not ‘really English’ either. I certainly don’t feel I live in a bubble. Working at the school, I have built up a netw...

Maria Kasmirli's website. I was born in Heraklion, Crete, but I have spent most of my life in the UK, and I feel more British than Greek in many ways, though I prefer to think of myself simply as European. In my youth I lived with with a family in Staffordshire. I attended Keele University in the early 1990s, taking a four-year degree in philosophy, sociology, and social anthropology, with a subsidiary in education. As part of my studies I did a teaching placement at a school in Stoke. In 2008 I moved ba...

Maria Kasmirli's website. Laquo; One day to go! Eight days to go! Six days to go! Wednesday was a wonderful, inspiring day. Pupils, teachers, and parents marched through Heraklion. To the City Hall, where they put their case to the city authorities. The Mayor of Heraklion promised to help guarantee our school’s future. And the Governor of Crete affirmed his support for the SEEH. Our campaign got a lot of press coverage. Passed 2,000 signatures. Our case is strong and we certainly making an impression!

Maria Kasmirli's website. Laquo; To the streets once again. Brush up your peopleship! In the class, we all know we’re not supposed to touch another person’s special possessions without permission, and especially not their hamsters, and super especially when they are not around. So I ask Jane not to play with Mandy’s hamster, please. She chooses to ignore me and decides to re-arrange the cage. I turn to Mandy and say, Well, what a powerful reaction, Mandy! A little bit of Everything. Cognitive Science. Ethiopia. Ireland. Black feminist epistemology – Collins. Should experiences of Black women be the grounds for knowledge claims when studying and theorising about Black women? Collins argues for the need for an alternative epistemological stance that reflects Black women’s standpoints. For Collins, as for many feminist standpoint theorists. Collins emphasises that neither all positivist aspects are bad nor all non-positivist frameworks automatically better.

Friday, July 28, 2006. History of the @. In 1972, Ray Tomlinson sent the first electronic message, now known as e-mail, using the @ symbol to indicate the location or institution of the e-mail recipient. Tomlinson, using a Model 33 Teletype device, understood that he needed to use a symbol that would not appear in anyone's name so that there was no confusion. Other linguists will argue that the @ sign is a more recent development, appearing sometime in the 18th century as a symbol used in commerce to ind...
