Data science means shopping and plucking, not just cooking.
http://blog.abegong.com/2015/07/data-science-means-shopping-and.html
Data science means shopping and plucking, not just cooking. Many people think that data science works like this:. But that’s not the whole picture- -not even close. Unless your data pipeline is quite mature, your data is probably more like this. Unstructured, uncleaned. Still very messy. Your whole data set is probably more like this:. It contains some of the key ingredients, but not all of them. Even if you have the right ingredients, you can’t boil your way to good cookies.). Feedback mechanisms within...

Kids + lasers = trucks
http://blog.abegong.com/2015/01/kids-lasers-trucks.html
Kids lasers = trucks. One of the perks of running a startup out of a maker space is that you can use the tools for other fun stuff as well. Last weekend, I took my son to the lab to make trucks with the laser cutter. NB: I don’t use my kids' real names online. Instead, I’ll refer to my son as "Genghis.”). Genghis is four and a half, and a huge fan of trucks and construction vehicles. When he was two, he insisted on “ Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site. Next, I found this handy SVG-to-DXF converter.

compSocSci: February 2013

Thoughts on computation, social science, and lifehacking. From an up-and-coming data scientist. Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Data can't do everything. So what? Again The one that says, "Data can't do everything." This time, David Brooks happens to be the one writing it, but it could have been anybody, really. Brooks gives a list of things that he feels data does poorly ("context", "big problems", "the social"), and then concludes with this gem:. If you want to know whether data can help answer a questio...

compSocSci: July 2013
http://compsocsci.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Thoughts on computation, social science, and lifehacking. From an up-and-coming data scientist. Wednesday, July 10, 2013. Speed up hadoop development with progressive testing. Debugging Hadoop jobs can be a huge pain. The cycle time is slow, and error messages are often uninformative - - especially if you're using Hadoop streaming, or working on EMR. I once found myself trying to debug a job that took a full six hours to fail. It took more than a week - a whole week! Test cluster performance: For big eno...

Foo camp aftermath
http://blog.abegong.com/2015/08/foo-camp-aftermath.html
I had a great time at Foo Camp. Last weekend. It’s an awesome melting pot people and ideas. Extremely high innovation density. Here are my notes (“things to dig into later”) from the weekend, with no attempt at explanation. These are a mix of nifty resources, topics discussed, and my own thoughts. From the “Cleverness with Slack” session:. Emoji : mechanism for "silence does not imply consent". Look up the point of contact for a customer. Process/culture things to have conversations about:. Voluntary, au...
