Like so many pioneer towns, Abernethy grew because it was a stop on the Canadian Pacific Railway. It wasn't easy getting the station, however. W. R. Motherwell, son of an Ontario farmer who came to Saskatchewan to take advantage of the Dominion Act offer of free quarter sections for settlers, had to lobby long and hard for it.
