Off the beaten track. Adventures of a Geographer. Highlights of the trip. November 16, 2012. With everyone whom I have spoken to since returning, their first question is always So what was your highlight? For the first part collecting samples in the north-western deserts, my highlight was the first time I saw enormous sand dunes. I found this beyond explanation, it was the incredible ‘sand sea’ I had expected, extending for hundreds of miles. My other highlight in Beijing was where one of the nights four...

Off the beaten track. Adventures of a Geographer. November 19, 2012. Now that I’m settled back home, I thought I’d share a few tips if you ever get the chance to visit China, or thinking of doing a fieldwork apprenticeship. 8211; Decide if it’s right for you. Embracing the opportunity will help you to get the best out of it- fieldwork is something that requires full immersion every day, which is hard to sustain for very long periods. 8211; Get some local expertise. 8211; Home comforts. China is an incred...

Off the beaten track. Adventures of a Geographer. November 8, 2012. If you thought London Underground was bad, try Beijing subway, and it was like this all. Military soldiers in the subway tunnels underneath Tiananmen Square. Beautiful but blustery summer palace canal. At the Forbidden City you too cold buy your very own Chairman Mao bust. Decorative roofs at the Forbidden City. Gold dragon on the side of a huge water drum. Highlights of the trip →. One thought on “ Insta-blog post: Beijing.

Abigail at Victory
Thursday, August 28, 2014. And Another One Bites the Dust. I cannot believe it is August 28th! September is almost here, and school has been in session for a few weeks now. Boy, the time has flown by! Here at Victory we have had the wonderful opportunity to serve campers and summer staff and it has been an incredible blessing. I even had an opportunity to spend time with family this past spring/summer! Yes, it snowed during orientation week, in JUNE! Only in Alaska. :). Even though the staff are tired an...

Mdash; Leave a comment. 6 things to learn from the internet this week. Also, a gratuitous dog photo. From Jane McGonigal’s (unsurprisingly) brilliant convocation speech. At Miami University, a counter-intuitive proposal: make problems harder to make them more interesting, engaging, and solve-able. 8220; For each single person you worry about, deduct 1% in quality from your writing. It will probably end up taped somewhere visible. Probably many visible places. One of the great boons of the internet is mak...

In school, an assignment was to write a 20-page or less story of our choice, and this is what I came up with. We wrote dedications, summaries, and pasted the stories in hardcover books. For now, I'll post my introduction and summary and put more later. Enjoy! Read to find out Ava’s destiny. For my proofreader/editor Mom and wise Dad. 13 year...
