Cancel My Subscription: May Days!
http://cancelmysubscription15.blogspot.com/2015/05/may-days.html
May 16, 2015. Across much of the nation, such words are uttered from student, teacher, and parent alike. With mere days of school left for millions of Americas, a brew of emotions percolate. It is a mixture of stress, anticipation, apathy and giddiness, none of which, if we are honest with ourselves, are suited to the task of educating our young people. We can almost fix, this, though, if we simply remove what makes us all giddy in the first place: summer vacation. If a school district decided to impleme...

Cancel My Subscription: September 2014

September 30, 2014. The family trip is a curious practice, and perhaps what makes them most curious is their name. We often refer to them as vacations. They are not. Vacations are calm, relaxing and peaceful. I have been on very few vacations. Family trips are more like expeditions. They are often adventures, excursions, or, as I now refer to them with my own family, Discovery Events. On our first full day after our arrival, we also discovered that if you’re going to have your kids stand in line fo...

I know there's nothing funny about domestic contentment, but you need to understand, I live in a house now. It has a yard, and a basement, and neighbors that never tell each other to go to hell.". 112610 - Or my name isn't what? Left to its own devices, microwave popcorn will kill you.". 102210 - Never, ever. . . My daughter, therefore, is quite like a gremlin in this respect.". 10110 - Two for One. What, you pour warm beer on them and charge me five times what they're worth? I don't get it.". Keeps my d...

Cancel My Subscription: Christmas Card, 2013
http://cancelmysubscription15.blogspot.com/2013/12/christmas-card-2013.html
December 23, 2013. Christmas Card, 2013. This past year has taught us many things, but perhaps the most important life lesson to come out of 2013 is this: brochures lie. Traveling with small children is a bad idea. If you see a brochure full of smiling little kids, those kids have just been fed an entire bar of chocolate. Brochures trick us into believing that we, too, could enjoy a relaxed, fun-filled day of deep sea fishing with the entire family. It is time we face the facts. If you have ever cleaned ...

May 1, 2015. Long Before That.". Harper Lee turned 89 this past Tuesday. Because we read her classic, To Kill a Mockingbird,. In sophomore English, many of us celebrated by eating too much sugar and dressing up as some of her characters. I wore a rather old suit jacket, in fact, trying to invoke a Depression-era, Alabama lawyer but, in truth, probably looking more like Reagan-era, Miami Vice. It did seem a bit weird, celebrating the birthday of a woman who, more than half a century ago, wrote perhaps the...

Cancel My Subscription: Discipline

May 10, 2014. One argument being used to suggest that EHS has a stricter-than-necessary discipline policy is the amount of suspensions being assigned. Although the number has actually declined in recent years, on the surface the value might still seem too high in relation to the total number of students. However, like most statistics, this number is a bit malleable, and, like all statistics, it needs to be taken in context. In closing, we need to ask ourselves: what is the purpose of schools anyway?

October 19, 2014. After all, everyone loves a winner, right? But, then again, life isn’t always a winner. Sometimes life is bad. For some people, life is bad most of the time. Like our favorite team struggling through a losing streak, we begin to ask the all too familiar questions: “How could this happen? Why did he throw that pass? What’s up with the defense? Who in the world is even calling these plays? Why did that happen last week? Football coach. He becomes the. He’s big and famous, after all&...

http://cancelmysubscription15.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
December 25, 2014. The following is an article written by a good friend of mine. It is a very personal reflection on his life and the lives of his colleagues. Because I believe his words speak to an important truth that is so rarely heard anymore, I am going to share them. One reason we are given the privilege of enjoying our own merry Christmases is because peacemakers like him are out doing their job. 8220;I wish I was a messenger and all the news was good.”.
