Dec 27, 2010. You Had Me At Woof. Published: 2010, Riverhead. Written by an active member of Northeast Boston Terrier Rescue, Inc. Anyone who knows me knows I am a huge advocate of dog rescue (as opposed to buying a dog from a pet store. I know what you're thinking. Another dog book. But I can't be fully blamed for this one because my Mom gave it to me for Christmas, along with training sessions for her very sweet but sometimes-rude granddog Cooper. Thanks, Mom, he needs it! And after we're done with for...

http://julie-whatimreading.blogspot.com/2012/01/small-hotel.html
Jan 5, 2012. Author: Robert Olen Butler. Published: Grove Press, 2011. The history of Kelly and Michael's marriage is revealed through the both happy and painful memories interwoven throughout the narrative. We learn about all their issues, for example: her childhood, spent trying to gain the approval of her emotionally detached father. surprise, surprise. Which I loved, and not just because of Ryan Gosling. Anyway, maybe the next book I post won't be so depressing. But don't count on it. I read a lot.

Feb 23, 2012. Never Let Me Go. Published: Vintage International, 2006. It's really going to be difficult to write a review of this vague and super-mysterious book without giving away the whole thing, but I really want to get this out there because this is one of my favorite books I've read recently. Told from 31-year-old Kathy's point of view, it is divided into three parts, which roughly represent her childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Once I started to figure out the mystery behind Hailsham, I coul...

Oct 28, 2010. How Angel Peterson Got His Name. Published: 2004, Yearling. This book is the definition of “short and sweet.” I read it in half a sitting. Paulsen starts out with a lighthearted dedication: “This book is dedicated to all boys in their thirteenth year; the miracle is that we live through it” and carries this sweet humorous tone throughout his true tales of dangerous teenage boy behavior. Oct 25, 2010. Published: 2004, Knopf (this version). Originally published in 1974, this book established ...

Sep 24, 2011. The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. Published: Anchor Books, 2010. After a long summer of reading way more books than is normal, I am going to start tending to my blog again. I'm going to start with this one because I really want someone else to read it. Sorry, I can't tell you what she sees because I'm dying for someone else to read this book so they can tell me what the hell they think goes on. Because I still haven't figured it out. I am definitely going to see what else Aimee Bender h...

Jan 12, 2011. ALA Youth Media Award Winners. Now I want to move on to what this post is actually about: the ALA 2011 Youth Media Award Winners. Announced earlier this week. Most of the books featured on this blog are young adult. Or "YA" books, which means the intended age group is about 12-18 years old. The reason I'm so interested in these books is because they have experienced a surge in popularity. Among all age groups in recent years (think Twilight. By Jennifer L. Holm; Heart of a Samurai. Was not ...
