About Honey Beekeeping Year 2012. Friday, 16 March 2012. After a mixed week of weather I took the time on a warm (ish) sunny day to make some changes to my second hive. My friend and I built an eke to go with the national brood box which I used in emergency to hive my late swarm last Autumn. My preferential hive is the 14x12 as it takes less time to inspect as opposed to the brood and a half system of the National Hive (happier bees! Friday, March 16, 2012. Thursday, 8 March 2012. About Honey Beekeeping Year 2012. Saturday, 16 June 2012. Rain has returned and disrupted the foraging for the bees. With all of my hives already preparing for swarming this does not bode well for the potential swarms or artificial swarms which will all require excessive feeding. Hive 2 also has queen cells of which I put one with some nurse bees into my *Apidea and sadly had to leave the rest which will probably mean the colony will swarm so I will have to be on my toes to check for any swarming activit...

About Honey Beekeeping Year 2012. Monday, 27 February 2012. Most of the week was wet so not much activity until Sunday when it was warm and sunny. Bees were flying from both hives collecting pollen. The pollen was white, bright yellow and a dark orange. So it seems i have brood in the hives preparing for the first nectar flow! Managed to contain myself and not to go for an early inspection so they can just get on with their job in hand. Let hope for more of this weather in the coming week.

About Honey Beekeeping Year 2012. Thursday, 5 April 2012. Wow what a contrasting fortnight it has been! After an initial week of warm sunny weather the temperature has dropped and some rain has returned. The bees must be wondering whats going on. My list of things to do for next month is to purchase more wax foundation for the additional hive so i have sufficient for the summer nectar flow, to ensure I have sufficient supers and to mark my queens upon the next inspection. About Honey Beekeeping Year 2012. Thursday, 31 May 2012. The weather has certainly picked up again and the bees have resumed their foraging duties! Being the swarming season it was imperative I inspected the hives regularly to ensure I knew what stage of queen cell production the bees were at. I added a queen excluder below the super so the queen doesn't lay eggs in the super frames, unfortunately I didn't see the queen but inspected the super thoroughly to make sure I hadn't left her in there.
