Serious Servants | One for the road
https://jonputt.wordpress.com/2011/02/14/serious-servants
One for the road. Reflections on keeping theology practical and devotional. Just a quick thought today about the people we chose to be deacons in church. Last semester I was stuck as we looked at Acts (in our New Testament lectures) and at church structures (in our independent church module), how important deacons are. There are some interesting thoughts on deacons on the IX Marks website in their eJournal if you’re interested to read a bit more.]. Laquo; Less is more. Date : February 14, 2011. 039;tforg...

Perplexing Politics | One for the road
https://jonputt.wordpress.com/2011/02/21/perplexing-politics
One for the road. Reflections on keeping theology practical and devotional. Complexity – politics is extraordinarily complicated and issues are usually too complicated to be simplified for one party’s position. Furthermore, it is possible for people to have similar goals and yet have great differences on how to achieve it. Given this complexity, it is a very damaging thing to make political allegiance to a particular party a test of orthodoxy. Warnings – finally three warnings:. Laquo; Serious Servants.

Fear… of what? | One for the road
https://jonputt.wordpress.com/2011/03/03/fear-of-what
One for the road. Reflections on keeping theology practical and devotional. Fear… of what? An interesting post this from CJ Mahaney – he is reflecting on how we respond to criticism. He points to the example of Paul, who was more afraid people would think too much of him, rather than too little! His full blog is here:. One for the road. Reflections on keeping theology practical and devotional. I’ve been thinking a little (and probably not enough) about humility this week. We’ve been going through Proverbs and James in chapel this week and we’ve also started reading through 1 Kings as we’ve started Old Testament 2 this term. I’ll try and summarise my thoughts very briefly but they’re hardly fully developed. So how can we attack our pride? 2 – Remember that however good we think we are, we need God’s help to ...We were r...

Confessions of a limited confessor… | One for the road
https://jonputt.wordpress.com/2011/04/08/confessions-of-a-limited-confessor
One for the road. Reflections on keeping theology practical and devotional. Confessions of a limited confessor…. We were talking in Ethics this week about telling the truth and whether telling a lie is ever justified. Without getting into our discussion about that particular dilemma, I just wanted to reflect on why we often feel the temptation to lie. Confession confronts self with the reality of personal sin. Regular confession helps us maintain our daily trust and dependence on Jesus for everything.

Social Action Vs. Evangelism? | One for the road

One for the road. Reflections on keeping theology practical and devotional. Social Action Vs. Evangelism? I’ve been studying for an essay on the relationship between mission and evangelism. It’s been particularly interesting getting stuck into some of this as Lausanne III has been going on down in Cape Town. A lot of ink has been spilt this century on the debate between mission and evangelism and I certainly don’t expect to solve it with my essay! Questions of primacy and centrality), the starting place ...

Capitol Lessons | One for the road
https://jonputt.wordpress.com/2011/03/07/capitol-lessons
One for the road. Reflections on keeping theology practical and devotional. Following my trip to Capitol Hill Baptist Church (CHBC), I thought I’d share some of my reflections from the visit (by sheer coincidence there seem to be 9)…. One thing that really stuck me was the quality of relationships. Could banter be stifling real friendships in some of our churches and communities? The church service had a lot of time given over for corporate prayer. CHBC are strong advocates of c hurch membership. Is chur...
