WHAT IS ABSOLUTE PITCH? Absolute pitch, also known as "perfect pitch", is a rare cognitive trait that involves the ability to identify and name musical tones without the use of an external reference pitch. Most individuals with absolute pitch identify tones rather effortlessly, with little or no deliberation. THE PURPOSE OF OUR RESEARCH STUDY. Peter K. Gregersen, MD, Principal Investigator. Is head of the Robert S. Boas Center for Genomics and Human Genetics at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. His research on genes that could explain absolute pitch comes from a life-long interest in music (unfortunately without absolute pitch! Coupled with a career devoted to understanding the genetic contribution to human disease as well as normal human traits such as absolute pitch and related cognitive traits.

Absolute pitch sometimes runs in families and clearly has a genetic component. Absolute pitch seems to be more common in certain ethnic groups, but the reasons for this are unclear. Some people with absolute pitch have strong color sensations, or other sensory experiences associated with particular pitches. When listening to pitches and intervals, people with absolute pitch have distinct patterns of brain activation compared to people with relative pitch. Absolute pitch ability can go out of tune with age.
