Picking them up and laying them down: August 2009
http://pickthemupandlaythemdown.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Picking them up and laying them down. Running, biking, and swimming in Scotland. Monday, 31 August 2009. Man, this has been a wet summer, even by Scottish standards. It's raining now, as I write these words, having just put the kids to bed. It was raining earlier when, after work, I did a short speed work-out at the track, before picking up the kids. Next I tried the work-out suggested to me by an old guy I met at the track several months ago. My hope is that some speed work will help me to run a good ra...

Picking them up and laying them down: June 2010
http://pickthemupandlaythemdown.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Picking them up and laying them down. Running, biking, and swimming in Scotland. Wednesday, 30 June 2010. How fast can you run a mile? 95 days until my next attempt to qualify for Boston. Last night my Work Friend and I ran "the hill" behind where I work (and pictured in the heading of this blog), one of our usual training runs. It's a total of 5 miles up and down, and on a pleasant Scottish summer evening, it was particularly enjoyable. I picked it up at the beginning of the last lap a little bit. A...

Picking them up and laying them down: November 2009
http://pickthemupandlaythemdown.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Picking them up and laying them down. Running, biking, and swimming in Scotland. Monday, 23 November 2009. Running in the dark. Well, the dark season is upon us. It's dark as I write these words at just before 7 am, and it will be dark tonight by 4 pm And the days are still getting shorter. On Dec. 1, after work, I set out for a long loop that I do that includes a section of The Road in the final few miles. On map-my-run it's 9.8 miles, but there's a bit extra from my office, so I call it 10. But it was ...

Picking them up and laying them down: Pneumonia diaries: day 1
http://pickthemupandlaythemdown.blogspot.com/2015/07/pneumonia-diaries-day-1.html
Picking them up and laying them down. Running, biking, and swimming in Scotland. Tuesday, 7 July 2015. Pneumonia diaries: day 1. On that Tuesday, I went for a run with my local running club, and struggled a bit to keep up. Over the next few days, my cough worsened. I was at work, and getting things done, but felt grotty. I went out for an easy four mile run on Friday after work, and experienced some tightness in my chest. Saturday night's sleep was also broken, and I was starting to wheeze. The GP (gener...

Picking them up and laying them down: July 2010
http://pickthemupandlaythemdown.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Picking them up and laying them down. Running, biking, and swimming in Scotland. Monday, 19 July 2010. 75 days until the Loch Ness Marathon. After the Maddy Moss hill race on Wednesday (last post), I took Thursday off. On Friday, I did my “town” loop of 5.4 miles after the children were in bed. I was a little tired, but it felt good work out some of the stiffness from the race. My goal was to do the town loop three times. Each loop is 5.4 miles; the total is. The second loop was good. I was loose now...

Picking them up and laying them down: June 2009
http://pickthemupandlaythemdown.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Picking them up and laying them down. Running, biking, and swimming in Scotland. Friday, 26 June 2009. Red Moss Revolution hill race. I don't know how I did in this race yet, but I ran hard. It was another glorious, Scottish summer evening for this hill race. It may look like I'm passing the woman in the picture with authority, however, she wasn't in the race (but just happened to be jogging on the race route), and she was running with a 3-legged dog. Labels: hill running; hill race. Tuesday, 23 June 2009.

Picking them up and laying them down: January 2010
http://pickthemupandlaythemdown.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Picking them up and laying them down. Running, biking, and swimming in Scotland. Sunday, 17 January 2010. The snow that's been on the ground for nearly a month is melting in earnest now. Snow has been unusual in the UK since I've been here, so it's presence is a reminder of winters in the Ohio (where I grew up) and New England (where I worked for 6 years before moving to the UK). For my children, it's an opportunity for sleding - or sledging, as it's referred to here. Tonight, I want to relax, have a bee...

Picking them up and laying them down: April 2010
http://pickthemupandlaythemdown.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Picking them up and laying them down. Running, biking, and swimming in Scotland. Tuesday, 20 April 2010. In the time of the volcano. 33 days until my qualifying marathon. It's been a strange week in the United Kingdom. The airports here have been closed for 5 days because of volcanic ash from Iceland. Apparently, they are to open tonight. Had I been running the Boston Marathon this year (that is, yesterday) I would have been out of luck - there were no flights into or out of the country.

Picking them up and laying them down: March 2010
http://pickthemupandlaythemdown.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Picking them up and laying them down. Running, biking, and swimming in Scotland. Monday, 29 March 2010. 55 days until my qualifying marathon. 12 years ago I trained for and ran the New York City marathon. It's the only other marathon I've done. Yesterday, Sunday, on my longest training run thusfar in the season, I did it again. OK, it wasn't quite as complete, but then I was only going for 16 miles. On my way out I headed into a stiff head-wind. I prefer to head out into the wind and then have it at ...
