Half Dome, Yosemite

Especially in the mountains, but a stroll along a Pacific coast beach is nice, too. I'm always on the lookout for interesting hikes, so please contact me with any suggestions! Here is a list of some of my favorites in no particular order (other than that I lived in CO before CA):. Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park, CO. (all time favorite hike! Grays and Torreys Peaks near Denver, CO (two fourteeners in one day! Quandary Peak near Breckenridge, CO (solo climb, got caught in a blizzard - exciting!

Longs Peak, Colorado
http://jeffstevens.org/Colorado.htm
You start at over 9000 feet, yet gain almost a mile of elevation before reaching the top at 14,255. The trail combines just about everything a hiker could ask for, from a relaxing walk through the woods (OK, a relentlessly uphill. On this particular day my sunglasses fell off as I jumped across a creek, causing one of the lenses to disappear as shown in the pictures below. Greg clearly has no fear of heights, nor anything else as far as I could tell. The picture below right is not from the Longs Peak...

'02 Corvette
http://jeffstevens.org/C5.htm
02 Corvette Takes Over as Daily Driver. Two factors combined to motivate this purchase; the Camaro had become quite noisy and fuel-inefficient, and the opportunity to drive a fifth generation Corvette (C5 to aficionados) for four days (thanks, Alan! As with the Camaro, I did all the modifications in my garage, and did all my own engine tuning. I drove the Corvette regularly for five years, including several track days at Thunderhill in north central California ( click here for Thunderhill site.

'02 Porsche Turbo
http://jeffstevens.org/Porsche.htm
02 Porsche 911 Turbo. Only doing. Or not doing. Well, I decided to stop doing. Since even 5-year-old Turbos were expensive, I sold both the Camaro and Corvette to fund my '02 996TT. After 10 years in a Camaro and 5 years in a Corvette, the Turbo was something completely different! Despite being almost 5 years old, the interior leather looked new and smelled wonderful. Porsche paint is, in a word, spectacular! More power came first in the form of new zero clearance turbochargers from Ultimate Motorwerks.

Feather Falls, California
http://jeffstevens.org/FeatherFalls.htm
Feather Falls may not have the variety of the other hikes Ive presented here, but it does offer a very pleasant walk through the woods and spectacular waterfall payoff at the end. It is an easy day hike for people from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento vicinity. There is always plenty of time for hiking buddy Tom and I to relax at the Sierra Nevada brew pub in Chico after the hike.

Monza Mirage
http://jeffstevens.org/Monza.htm
Monza Mirage, from Poseur to Performance. Money was very tight, so I taught myself to do body and mechanical work in my detached ( and unheated) one-car garage. I want to tell you that it gets really cold in Milwaukee in the middle of winter! The crowning touch was a home-brewed nitrous oxide injection system that I built after examining a packaged system at a shop dealing in automotive go-faster parts. I still have the original solenoid valves and their mounting plate.

Half Dome, Yosemite
http://jeffstevens.org/HalfDome.htm
My hiking buddy Tom and I had already walked about a mile to reach this sign at the trail head, putting the overall hike distance at about 18 miles. You will gain (and lose! More than 3/4 mile of elevation. Start early, wear comfortable shoes, and take plenty of water! Moleskin on the backs of my heels prevents blisters. At the top, a fence and signs remind us that venturing into the stream, that appears calm enough for wading, could easily result in the (last) ride of your life! The trail has taken us a...

'08 Corvette
http://jeffstevens.org/C6.htm
08 Corvette, Current Daily Driver. There are two selectable exhaust paths, one conventionally muffled and the other bypassing the muffler. The sound difference is significant! Corvette clutch take-up is precise, and the shifter is smooth and solid. And on my favorite test pavement, the two cars post nearly identical speeds. It boils down to what moves you as a driver. If you like the Vette, the 911 feels anemic and twitchy. If you like the Porsche, the C6 feels like piloting a powerful wa...The picture b...
