Accessibility Awareness

Accessible Desk Design Gets Ableist Comments on Linkedin. On Linkedin today, someone updated their status with a photo of a Zero Gravity Workstation. The Zero G is designed to allow the user to lay reclined with computer monitors directly in front of their eyes and an area for keyboard/mouse to be placed ergonomically. The world needs more designs like this that allow any “body” to get back to working at their desk without pain and without further damage to joints. I like the idea of comfort though.

Reach More Readers by Creating Accessible Content. There are a few things to keep in mind when sharing information on the web. You can reach a wider audience by using these guidelines. Always provide a text description of images and info-graphics. Remember, a picture is only worth 1000 words if those words are in a plain-text description. Images like the one below are popping up everywhere. A memorable quote is pasted on top of a photo of a sunset. More memorable? Take, for example, this LinkedIn share, ...

Live Subtitles for Presentations and Streaming Content Producers. Over the past month or so I’ve been working on a program that uses voice recognition to provide subtitles as a text overlay. I’m using C# in Visual Studio and Windows Speech Recognition. The program is working so far, but there are a few bugs I need to work out. In the future I will live-stream testing efforts. Recent court decisions, planned steps by the US Department of Justice, as well as legislation at the state level in the US and elsewhere mean that private companies will need to provide greater accessibility on their web sites.
