days of wonder and grace: On God's Account
http://daysofwonderandgrace.blogspot.com/2011/07/on-gods-account.html
Days of wonder and grace. Adventures in being a family of faith. Monday, July 11, 2011. The human condition is what it is: fallen. All of us make stupid comments in ignorance, even those of us with special needs kids, because we cannot possibly know what it true about every human difference. Beyond that, we cannot keep up with the ever-shifting current PC. And beyond that, we cannot instantly grasp what another most needs to hear. And I won’t stop praying that God will help. Jesus' notariety spread throu...

days of wonder and grace: We Are the Experts on Our Own Kids
http://daysofwonderandgrace.blogspot.com/2011/07/we-are-experts-on-our-own-kids.html
Days of wonder and grace. Adventures in being a family of faith. Sunday, July 3, 2011. We Are the Experts on Our Own Kids. That's the truth whether we wish it was so or not. I'm conflicted about the fact that I'm conflicted by the encounter. After all, as a historian I essentially do that all the time: play devil's-advocate, prodding the assumptions underlying conclusions, asking, "What if we're wrong about this particular assumption? Why wouldn't I welcome someone doing that for my daughter? Sure: I wou...

days of wonder and grace: Environment Helps the Pendulum Swing
http://daysofwonderandgrace.blogspot.com/2011/07/environment-helps-pendulum-swing.html
Days of wonder and grace. Adventures in being a family of faith. Thursday, July 14, 2011. Environment Helps the Pendulum Swing. Her pendulum would swing back. I ought to stop there and observe: Great Mercy. FASD can be unremittingly hard for some kids and families. But Hope is not as severely affected as some exposed kids are. And God saw fit to re-direct our parenting from "this is a typical child who. To "this is an atypical child who. A full three years before her diagnosis confirmed. I am blessed to ...

days of wonder and grace: Our Wake-Up Call
http://daysofwonderandgrace.blogspot.com/2011/04/our-wake-up-call.html
Days of wonder and grace. Adventures in being a family of faith. Wednesday, April 27, 2011. This is the beginning of the story of our quest for an FASD evaluation for Hope. Our wake-up call came in the middle of the night several miles in the sky above the Pacific Ocean. The word "call" doesn't quite capture the sound. Think shrieks of terror from an almost-six year old being pursued in her sleep by giant hairy spiders wielding sharp knives. Or something on that order. How long would it go on? It seemed ...

My Friend Ron | Hope-Ability
https://hopeability.wordpress.com/my-friend-ron
Living With Hope and Celebrating Our Abilities. Ron Franke is a happy man. Twenty-five years after getting diagnosed with MS, he still approaches each day with an eager sense of what’s possible. After a month, Ron started seeing doctors about the foot problem, but no one could figure it out. Why would a healthy young outdoorsman like Ron be having such symptoms? He began to worry; what could it be? In 1995 Ron retired and began receiving SSDI payments. Unfortunately, he didn’t have any health insuran...

Days of wonder and grace. Adventures in being a family of faith. Tuesday, July 12, 2011. Mercy: "Mom, were you born in the nineteen hundreds? Me: "Yes, I was.". Mercy: "Well, you know. Back then they didn't say, 'Pass the beef' or 'Pass the chicken.'". Me: "What did they say? Mercy: [Looking embarrassed] "They said, 'Pass the hamburger.' 'Pass the hot dog.'". Me: "What else did they say in the nineteen hundreds? Mercy: "I don't know. But they. Mercy: "Yes. Like they wiped their mouths.". Subscribe to: Po...

days of wonder and grace: Things That Are Seen
http://daysofwonderandgrace.blogspot.com/2011/06/things-that-are-seen.html
Days of wonder and grace. Adventures in being a family of faith. Tuesday, June 14, 2011. Things That Are Seen. I have been blessed by a series of three interviews. A father in our church, John Knight, did recently with our pastor, John Piper, after a sermon series on John Chapter 9, the story of Jesus and the man born blind. The first three verses in that chapter read:. Jesus answered, "It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him." (John 9:1-3).
