Although it is not the case during the entirety of the novels it is the female friends of the protagonists that lend advice and such in tough situations. Unfortunately for the protagonists the new female friends made are not always true friends. Lois was accused first by her cousin Prudence after she fell and bruised her arm.

Even though Goodman Brown knows that he is headed for evil deeds the guide persuades him to continue on with his journey. The guide looks like Brown's grandfather, I believe this is to make young Goodman Brown feel more at ease in following the guide. Looking like his grandfather gives the guide a familiar face and a sense of trust from resembling an elder of the young man.
