Wholly American, wholly Orthodox. I’ve been noticeably worse the last couple of days. However, Christopher called at 10:00 from the driveway as he was pulling out to drive down here, so he should be here at the latest by 11. And Marlin and Linda are dropping by on their way out of town, so I should be able to get them to stay until Christopher gets here. They’re here. More later. Wholly American, wholly Orthodox. Lass mich deinen Mund küssen! 29 August, 2009. It seemed appropriate, somehow, on the Commemoration of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, to watch this production. Possibly the greatest film version of an opera yet. Stratas could never have sung this in the theater, so we only have this, and what an actress she is! Salome, Herodias, Herod, all so vile and repulsive, and Bernd Weikl sings a magnificent Jokanaan. What music! Wo ist er, dessen Sündenbecher. 27And immedia...

Wholly American, wholly Orthodox. 13 December, 2009. Freezing rain has sealed most everybody in this morning, and Altoona is becoming passable, so Pam et al should be over here soon. Christopher probably won’t be able to get here for another couple of hours. 12 December, 2009. Last night, I asked Phyllis to stay a bit longer. She said she’s be back, but I got the distinct feeling I would never see her again. Please, God, make me wrong. 10 December, 2009. 10 December, 2009. They haven’t shown yet. Yesterd...

Almost screwed myself | Central Pennsylvania Orthodox

Wholly American, wholly Orthodox. Instead of paying attention to med shifts, and getting up around 1 or so at the latest, but I decided to wait until 2-ish, when Christopher would be there. I will never do that again. Being moved in that hydraulic lift can be excruciating. That, then being plunked down into the chair, then being jerked around to adjust me, well, it just ain’t pleasant. Suffice it to say that right after being seated is the only time I always need a breakthrough Methadone. I agree change ...

Wholly American, wholly Orthodox. Med changes took effect at midnight, when I got 35 meg Methadone. This morning I had to have a breakthrough pill, 10 mg instead of 7.5, but 8 am is when I get my next base 35 mg dose. Wholly American, wholly Orthodox. 27 September, 2009. The Divine Liturgy in English in Byzantine Chant by Cappella Romana, which you can buy here. Now, that’s what ison is supposed to sound like! They use the Greek Archdiocese of Great Britain translation, which is fairly odd in places (Mother of God instead of Theotokos), and you don’t expect to hear the full prayers on a recording like this, but it’s a great documentation of Byzantine chant. 25 September, 2009. 22 September, 2009. Wholly American, wholly Orthodox. Picture from the Orthodox Wiki entry on Passion Week. A worshiper prostrates before the cross at the Twelve Passion Gospels service at St. Mary Orthodox Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In the evening, we have the Great and Holy Friday Matins, with the reading of the Twelve Passion Gospels. This is the closest equivalent in Orthodoxy to the Stations of the Cross. 8221; in anticipation of Pascha. We re-enter the now-lit church, and celebrate Pascha Matins and the Divin...

Wholly American, wholly Orthodox. 31 October, 2009. Major surgery today. More sometime in the future, when I’m well enough and I have a way to post. 30 October, 2009. My legs are pretty much useless today — I can’t even close the recliner. I have an appointment Monday with the orthopedic surgeon, but as bad as this has gotten, I wonder if maybe I should call his office today. 25 October, 2009. 24 October, 2009. Wholly American, wholly Orthodox. Ah, so you’re going to a Byzantine liturgy. In the spirit of Frederica Mathewes-Green’s 12 Things I Wish I’d Known. With which I cannot, alas, compete), here are a few things that will make your visit more fruitful, and perhaps, a bit less uncomfortable. If the church has pews and your feet are giving out, feel free to sit. If there are no pews in the church (my parish has no pews), there will be folding chairs, usually stacked against the walls. So if you go int...Becau...
