A Clerk of Oxford. Thursday, 14 May 2015. Nu is þon gelicost'. Christ's Ascension on the Wirksworth Stone. Today is the feast of the Ascension. Last year I posted extracts from an Old English poem, Christ II. Which has a take on the Ascension story which is so beautiful and astonishing that I just have to link to it again. Today; if you haven't read it, do. These are the closing lines of the poem:. Nu is þon gelicost, swa we on laguflode. Ofer cald wæter ceolum liðan. Geond sidne sæ, sundhengestum,.

http://aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

A Clerk of Oxford. Sunday, 22 February 2015. Hoard up your goldhoard in heaven'. Blogging will be light here for a little while, though if you should be so inclined you can read something I wrote this week for the BBC History website here. If nothing else, it features the most insanely colourful Vikings you'll ever see). Today I want to post just a very short extract from one of Ælfric's sermons for the first Sunday in Lent. He begins by saying:. Is quite often used in Old English to translate thesaurus.

A Clerk of Oxford: Anselm and Alphege

http://aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2015/04/anselm-and-alphege.html

A Clerk of Oxford. Sunday, 19 April 2015. Alphege in a 12th-century Canterbury manuscript ( BL Cotton MS Nero C VII, f.46v. Today is the feast of St Alphege (Ælfheah), one of the chief saints of Anglo-Saxon Canterbury. Taken prisoner during the Viking siege of Canterbury in 1011, he was held hostage for seven months before being killed by his captors at Greenwich, apparently because he would not (or could not) pay a ransom for his freedom. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. It makes a nice contrast to the conver...

A Clerk of Oxford: October 2014

http://aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

A Clerk of Oxford. Friday, 31 October 2014. Rochester in the rain. In the waning days of October, I've been re-reading Charles Dickens' final, unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Since it's the story of a troubled young cathedral precentor! This is not an unpleasant or a morbid thought - actually I find it comforting. I have far more attachments among the dead than among the living, and am sometimes more at home there, too. Why, my man, I’ve been waiting for you a devil of a time! When erthe up...

British Literature to 1800 (Fall 2016). Monday, October 26, 2015. For Wednesday: School for Scandal, Acts III and IV. Answer TWO of the following. Q1: In Act IV, Joseph attempts to seduce Lady Teazle in an interesting manner. What is his argument for taking an indiscretion against Sir Peter, and why is Lady Teazle almost convinced by it? What does this say about the morals of a so-called "man of sentiment"? Why do their arguments strike us as curiously artificial and borrowed? Friday, October 23, 2015.
