Computer Geek

Musings about technology, computer books and software. June 01, 2006. Internet Explorer 7 review. Recently tried out the latest beta. Of Internet Explorer 7 and here are some of my thoughts on it. First of, it's ugly. I thought IE6 was ugly but IE7 takes the cake. The screen you see when you start is one of these run-once screens, which in this case, asks you about local settings, probably for using MSN - I don't. Click the Quick Tabs. IE 7 will be the version used in the upcoming Vista release of Windows.

Computer Geek: October 2005

http://www.acomputergeek.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_archive.html

Musings about technology, computer books and software. October 26, 2005. Posted by Jason @ 6:07 PM. October 02, 2005. Geominder allows you to create location-based reminders that stay attached to physical locations. A location-based reminder can be much more convenient than standard time-based reminders - for example in situations such as:. When I arrive at the office, remind me to review next week's schedule". When I pass supermarket, remind me to buy vegetables". At home remind me to call Dave".

Computer Geek: Television shows scramble forensic evidence

http://www.acomputergeek.blogspot.com/2005/09/television-shows-scramble-forensic.html

Musings about technology, computer books and software. September 23, 2005. Television shows scramble forensic evidence. Yeah, I admit I like the CSI shows particularly the original. It seems that shows like CSI are so well-known that jurors in crime investigations believe that Forensics experts can do no wrong:. And criminals use the shows to try to mask potential evidence of their crimes though in many cases, they're not very successful:. Posted by Jason @ 3:27 AM. If only it were so easy! I'm a 30somet...

Computer Geek: Malwhere installs spyware

http://www.acomputergeek.blogspot.com/2005/08/malwhere-installs-spyware.html

Musings about technology, computer books and software. August 05, 2005. Happened to visit the website. Of a free product that purports to scan your system for malware, spyware, etc. The website looks great, and there are many free products out there that are very useful to have. However, this one is actually what it claims to stop - spyware. I discovered this through Microsoft's own AntiSpyware Beta. Posted by Jason @ 12:34 AM. Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. Computer Geek: Fee-based e-mail plan raises eyebrows

http://www.acomputergeek.blogspot.com/2006/02/fee-based-e-mail-plan-raises-eyebrows.html

Musings about technology, computer books and software. February 09, 2006. Fee-based e-mail plan raises eyebrows. Despite its critics, this is actually a good idea. Of course, one vice president doesn't think so:. Tom Gillis, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at IronPort Systems Inc., a provider of e-mail security products to large corporations and ISPs (Internet service providers), voices common concerns. Bzzzzz. Wrong. Spammers are awash in cash because. 1,000,000 x 0.001 x $20)! Or half of b...

Canadian Politics. It's not so boring. September 22, 2006. Afghan president contradicts NDP. A recent Reality Check. On the NDP website pulled a quote from Afghan President Karzai's speech to the UN to suggest that the mission in Afghanistan isn't balanced:. Bombings in Afghanistan are no solution to the Taliban. You do not destroy terrorism by bombing villages. You do not destroy terrorism by launching military operations in areas where only the symptoms have emerged.". The country’s per-capita income h...

Tips, links, and tutorials about the best OS in the world. Thursday, September 29, 2005. One of the best computer help forums. That I frequent (I'm Linuxdude32 there) has a popular Linux help area. One of the popular distributions (distros) talked about there is PC Linux OS, affectionatedly referred to as PCLOS. I finally got a chance to try it out and came away from the experience mildly annoyed. Require you to go and download these codecs seperately. PCLOS is based on Mandriva code so it has excellent ...

Checking out the community version of SUSE called OpenSUSE. This is their second beta of version 10. The installer looks mostly the same except that they give you a choice of desktops (they did before too, but it wasn't obvious how to set this up). I picked KDE being most familar with it.
