A Country Victorian

Friday, July 11, 2014. Coldwater, Veils, and Gettysburg! It has been a while since I posted last. Somehow now that summer's here I'm busier than ever! I finished a veil for my bonnet the night before and tried it out that day. I am pleased to report that it works splendidly! Plus, it was just fun to wear. I think veils add a bit of mystery and intrigue to the wearer. The veil in the picture on the left is an original that was being sold on ebay a while back and the one I based my own veil off. A Country Victorian: January 2014

http://www.acountryvictorian.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Starch. The magical liquid that makes collars stand up, petticoats fluff, and under sleeves crinkle. In this case, it was my petticoats that took the plunge. I decided after reading again and again how magically stiff starch makes things (petticoats that stand up on their own? To try my hand at starching. None of the store spray-on starch for me, no thank you! Posted her recipe, so I tried that. I'll let you travel over to her blog to read the finer details. They do stand up!

A Country Victorian: September 2013

http://www.acountryvictorian.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 16, 2013. Built in a four-pointed-star shape in 1845, Fort Wayne stands across the river from Canada. It was constructed to protect Detroit from attack if need be. Luckily, a treaty w a. S signed with Britain even before any cannon were procured. The new Fort was re-commissioned as an infantry garrison, but did not see any troops until the outbreak of the Civil War, when the first Michigan soldiers reported for duty. A Country Victorian: May 2013

http://www.acountryvictorian.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 26, 2013. Greenfield Village had their annual Civil War Remembrance this Memorial Day weekend, so of course I had to go. Although it's a good two hours drive for us, it was so much fun and I'm glad we went. I had been there before when I was little (around eight or so), but I didn't remember any of it, so it was nice to go back. I'm pretty sure the green outfit in the center is a wrapper, based on the ties down the front of the skirt. Anyone else know for sure? Doesn't it look so cozy? They a...

A Country Victorian: April 2013

http://www.acountryvictorian.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 24, 2013. I've been very bad about sewing recently. It just hasn't interested me. This afternoon I was determined to get over that and put a good two and a half hours work into my corset. I finished fitting it (drawing all over in the process), zigzagged the edges flat, since the seam allowances in most places were too small to flat-fell, and cut some of the coutil into strips for the bone casing. I'm happy to report that my new machine sews it wonderfully! Close up of the zigzag. It's a...

A Country Victorian: July 2013

Monday, July 29, 2013. My Chemise and Split Drawers! And a Dress form). If you have a Civil War dress, you also need all the correct undergarments to go with it. When I first made my dress, I had no clue about the correct 1860's silhouette, so recently I've been filling where I missed. A chemise and a pair of split drawers were the final pieces to complete my outfit. There is some excess fabric below the arm, because of the way the pattern is, but it really doesn't bother me. On to my dress form! Once I ...

The Victorian Needle: Kristen: Ethical Selling Practices of the Reenacting Community

http://victorianneedle.blogspot.com/2014/09/kristen-ethical-selling-practices-of.html

Monday, September 1, 2014. Kristen: Ethical Selling Practices of the Reenacting Community. If you haven't probably guessed already, I own a business attached to the blog. This year I formed my own little sutlery at the Jackson, MI event. The Victorian Needle. Had a lovely weekend with Jewels Victoriana. And I learned so much! Room for improvement, and when you feel you know it all, well that. Is perhaps the most ignorant of all. What does the final product price reflect? Because she writes posts like this.

Sunday, July 26, 2015. In Memory of Dolly. So I'm finally ready to do this. I'll start with a question. Have you ever felt both extreme loss and happiness, both in the same moment? Think tears of sadness mixed with joy. That's been my odd experience handling the death of my Grandma Dolly earlier in July. I always wished that I had my Grandma's blue eyes! This blog post is for her. My Dad, Patty, and Uncle. She loved going on the boat with my Grandpa. She never remarried, and always missed him. A visit fr...

Wednesday, August 26, 2015. Hurtful Words: Canceling the Battle of Seccessionville. I feel we as a reenacting community need to be aware, to realize we are not above reproach even in our volunteer educational role. At the very core, a reenactor is a lover of history. Also, I'm interested in continuing any place that attempts to preserve history. My research on Boone Hall has shown a myriad of programs that do just that. Education on slavery, agriculture, and basic 19th century life is essential t...O the...

The Victorian Needle: November 2014

http://victorianneedle.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 24, 2014. Kristen: Lincoln Mourning Ribbons. For this particular post I will focus on the mourning ribbons themselves, rather than the whole spectrum of mourning during that time. For some reason I am fascinated by these little strips of fabric that tied together an entire country through the death of a beloved leader. Oh fabric, that beloved medium. How do social status/financial/political factors play a role in the prevalence of this type of documentation? As the news flashed over the ...

The Victorian Needle: The Rhetoric of the Confederate Flag Debate

http://victorianneedle.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-rhetoric-of-confederate-flag-debate.html

Thursday, July 9, 2015. The Rhetoric of the Confederate Flag Debate. So as you may have read, I spent time in Mexico. 6 sweet days. And when I returned, my Grandma died. It has been a very busy two weeks for me, filled with a wedding and a funeral. I'll be posting about my Grandma soon once I find more of her awesome pictures, so I'm spending a bit of time on that post before you'll see it. These are things that happened, and no one is disputing that. Warning: Be prepared for very. For my part, I've seen...

The Victorian Needle: Las Vegas

http://victorianneedle.blogspot.com/2015/07/las-vegas.html

Friday, July 17, 2015. The past few weeks have been a constant blur. Running tired from Mexico and my Grandma's funeral, I decided to take a break.for three days, and fly to Las Vegas! The view from our hotel. I've been to Vegas twice before, each time with family. So it was a real treat to make the trip with people my own age! We stayed at the Hilton Elara, on a floor high enough to make my ears pop in the elevator. See that red stripe down the side of the building? Did I mention the Starbucks? A few of...
