Recognition for the Border Collie's Heritage. Border Collies at Work. When one thinks of the ‘work’ of a Border Collie, naturally herding livestock is what springs to mind. Border Collies were bred solely for use as a herding dog and Adam Telfer bred his dogs for just such a purpose. A Border Collie, in it’s usual role as a Sheepdog. Recognition for the Border Collie's Heritage. Born in 1901, Old Kep’s contribution to the breed was his ‘eye’ – he had the ability to control sheep with a look, which resulted in 45 first places at the trials. His kind nature was also a great influence; the first Border Collies were averse to strangers, whereas Old Kep was the kindest dog.
