prose and conversations...: October 2008

http://adamgustine.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

About God, the gospel and this life in the city. Thursday, October 30, 2008. Well, another season has come and gone. The greatest game in the world has once again crowned a champion and a city waiting decades for a championship gets to savor the taste of victory. Congrats. The other day I saw a commercial advertising hi-def television and it used baseball as its marketing ploy. The man buys an HDTV. How many of my memories are tied to baseball? Why do I care so much about a game, or a team? I guess that ...

About God, the gospel and this life in the city. Thursday, September 24, 2009. Remembering Whidbey: Part 1. A few years ago, I flew to Washington state with some friends to attend a conference. We spent a week at an old army base called Camp Casey that was located on Whidbey Island off the coast of Seattle. We all worked together at a Christian college outside of Chicago and we were at this conference to think about things like mentoring and spiritual formation on a college campus. Right away, I was feel...

About God, the gospel and this life in the city. Thursday, February 4, 2010. In a 1950 essay entitled, “The Spirit of Justice,” Reinhold Niebuhr wrote the following:. Wouldn’t we most likely consider that our right, to retrieve what was ungratefully received? An act of justice is a way of pursuing what is actually good, and not just good for me. It seeks to promote the interests of all parties, or all of society, and not just self-interest. It takes a genuine interest in the other, and seeks to l...The W...

About God, the gospel and this life in the city. Wednesday, May 26, 2010. Engaging our neighborhood: Part 1. So this is our neighborhood.from the air. You can see the Gowanus expressway (thanks Mr. Moses! That cuts us off from Sunset Park and Dyker Heights. In the bottom right corner of the expressway, just to the right of the long strip of green that is Lief Erickson Park, is our church. Engaging the neighborhood has to involve this kind of questioning. More on that soon. View my complete profile. The P...

prose and conversations...: where my treasure is...

http://adamgustine.blogspot.com/2010/05/where-my-treasure-is.html

About God, the gospel and this life in the city. Friday, May 21, 2010. Where my treasure is. I'm sitting today in Madison Square Park, reading and thinking about God's Kingdom and what it says to me, to us, to the city. I'm wrestling with it all as I watch evidence of our dominant cultural values walk by.affluence, power, beauty, leisure. Today I find it easy to believe Jesus when he says that following him will mean that we will be misunderstood, maligned and rejected. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The number one internet travel destination for those walking the line between profundity and absurdity. Monday, February 27, 2006. The Profound Simplicity of Sabbath. The first thought in my mind after lunch was that I did not want any interaction with others for a while. I sensed that God had some business with me. I sensed a need to truly keep a Sabbath, if even for an afternoon. Intimate. Profound. Simple. Posers, Fakers and Wannabes: Unmasking the Real You. Posted by Andrew Gates @ 4:42 PM. My brothe...

pursuing peace: April 2009

http://abbyseeland.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. ps. thirty-four fourteen. Tuesday, April 28, 2009. I just wanted to share a poem that recently became the lyrics for a song Tim and I recorded together. The poem came out of a time of weakness a couple weeks ago. I hope you enjoy it. You said love, You said peace. My eyes saw stains upon my heart. You said there's grace, You said I'm free. And still I stay, and still I grieve. I knocked myself down to the floor. Before You could raise me up. My pray...

Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. ps. thirty-four fourteen. Monday, September 15, 2008. Drama, love, and maggots. My eyes casually browsed the salmon-colored pages of my syllabus while the professor lectured on class absences and participation. Group project: 12% of final grade. I suppress a sigh and begin to scan the room for possible “group members,” hoping that my smart, hardworking friends have not already created a posse without me…. I have never liked group projects. My Year in Books →. August 4, 2010 · 1:43 pm. John Perkins on Loving Our Neighbor. John Perkins is probably one of the most important Christian leaders that most of the white evangelical world has never heard of. He was beaten and nearly killed during the Civil Rights movement, he is a champion for the cause of the poor (and more specifically, living among the poor) and he’s created space for interracial healing and dialogue through ministries like CCDA. And Voice of Calvary. And came across these words:.

pursuing peace: joy?

http://abbyseeland.blogspot.com/2009/07/joy.html

Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. ps. thirty-four fourteen. Thursday, July 2, 2009. Joy  One very un-tangible thing.  And something that I do not understand most days. Here is what I wrote on my typewriter last week. As I walked downstairs to my room, I pondered this question:. On a given day, that is free from tragedy or extreme ecstasy, I can choose to think about hundreds of wonderful things or many terrible things about life. Is it really something like peace, trust? So that was...

pursuing peace: November 2008

http://abbyseeland.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. ps. thirty-four fourteen. Sunday, November 23, 2008. I started listening to Christmas music earlier this year, in hopes of preventing Christmas Day disappointments. I don't mean a shallow sadness, it runs deep and almost aches. It isn't the presents. I like giving them away. It isn't the cookies. I am allergic to them. It isn't the trees, they are evergreen all year long. just not inside my home. It's the Light. it's Jesus. I long to be near Jesus i...

A Robust Theology of Creation. A Redeemable World →. July 1, 2010 · 3:11 am. NT Wright on Jesus as a Moral Example. I’m reading N.T. Wright’s. Which is a call for the church to rethink discipleship as putting on the virtues and learning the habits of God’s Kingdom. This discipleship begins not by imagining Jesus as our moral mentor, but by heeding his call to take up our cross and die. Here is an excerpt:. Jesus, a kind of religious mascot. We look at him approvingly and decide we’ll copy him (up t...
