Adam's Command: April 2016
http://adamscommand.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html
A blog about birding, wildlife, and citizen science - Genesis 2:19. Monday, April 4, 2016. Outdoor Expo at Ben Avery. Last Saturday, after a scouting trip for the Bendire's Thrasher Survey, my Dad and I attended the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Outdoor Expo at the Ben Avery Shooting Range. Admission was free as was the parking. I found it to be a very informative event and I would like to share some details of my experience there. A captive Golden Eagle at the event. Check out their Bible verse!
Adam's Command: December 2016

A blog about birding, wildlife, and citizen science - Genesis 2:19. Monday, December 19, 2016. Remembering The Charlie H. Painter Memorial BioBlitz. It's been such a long time since I've posted! I started my 16 credit college semester in late August and haven't had much time for blogging (or birding for that matter). Although I haven't posted for a while, I still have a couple trips from this summer and fall to share. This one began in late July. A House Wren; likely the subspecies T. a. cahooni. This is...
Adam's Command: July 2016
http://adamscommand.blogspot.com/2016_07_01_archive.html
A blog about birding, wildlife, and citizen science - Genesis 2:19. Wednesday, July 27, 2016. Through The Portal: Day 3. Last time on Adam's Command:. One of its parents also flew in! We had fantastic views at close range of this tiny owl. The false-eyes on this bird were incredible. Moving on after breakfast, we stopped along Paradise Road in some higher elevation desert habitat. I discerned the deep calls of a Greater Roadrunner in the distance and then, a Rufous-crowned Sparrow began singing. ...After...

A blog about birding, wildlife, and citizen science - Genesis 2:19. Wednesday, May 18, 2016. California Coastal Tour Part 3: The Land of Sea Spray, Lichen, and Fog. Last time on Adam's Command:. Joshua birds the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and finds 6 lifers including a rare Gull-billed Tern and a Ridgway's Rail! The domain of a true California endemic.can you guess what it might be? Some of Central California's beautiful oak savanna. I wasn't expecting to see such a familiar word so far from home!
Adam's Command: The Slate Creek Divide
http://adamscommand.blogspot.com/2016/06/the-slate-creek-divide.html
A blog about birding, wildlife, and citizen science - Genesis 2:19. Monday, June 13, 2016. The Slate Creek Divide. Still weary and weather-beaten from my California Coastal Tour, I geared up once again for a trip to Maricopa County's fabled high elevations! Our first stop was at Little Caesar's Pizza of course. We bought 3 pizzas and threw them in the back of the truck to munch on throughout our trip. No hassle there! I had never seen one up close, so this was a real treat. After spending 15 minutes or s...

Birding With Caleb: September 2014
http://birdingwithcaleb.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 21, 2014. On September 15th it was my golden birthday and I turned 15. I ended my 14th year with 316 life birds and was pumped! Once we were done looking at all of the songbirds and a Bald Eagle we headed down to the lake shore to look for the shorebirds, waterfowl, and hopefully some gulls or terns. While my Mom and I walked along the shore a Semipalmated Plover flew by us calling and landed not to far, that's when I took this photo. The bird was my lifer Sabine's Gull! However, there ...
Birding With Caleb: January 2015
http://birdingwithcaleb.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 14, 2015. A fun family trip to California. You will have to read to find out! As I continued looking around I was able to get a few more birds but no FOYs. We then went off to get lunch at a local restaurant when I spied a familiar shoulder from across a main road. It was Mr. Red-shouldered Hawk! These two birds brought my year list up to 299. But once I looked to the right of the BOGU I could see another gull that was not just my 300th bird of the year but a lifer! After spending seve...
Birding With Caleb: April 2015
http://birdingwithcaleb.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 22, 2015. When the Ponds Recharge in Glendale. There was also a one-day-wonder Red-breasted Merganser that I identified. He was hanging with his ruddy's not his peeps. RBME don't hang with peeps! Red-breasted Merganser-1st winter male, note the dark green forehead. The impressive Snowy Egrets seemed to be showing off their awesomeness but the Great Horned Owls seemed unimpressed (like always). Great Horned Owl- Adult on left fledgling on right. Wednesday, April 15, 2015. The first two th...
Birding With Caleb: March 2015
http://birdingwithcaleb.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 31, 2015. A Blast From the Past: Deep Within the Jungle. Okay, so the title of this post might make you think "Oh my gosh, did Caleb go to Panama? Did he go out of the Country? We then stealthily swam down the stream a little ways when we looked up about twenty feet above our heads and there it was, my lifer Yellow-billed Cuckoo! Yellow-billed Cucckoo- Find Waldo! I then saw a promising grove of sycamores, willows, and cottonwoods so I hobbled over to the middle of the stand and just stare...
Birding With Caleb: November 2014
http://birdingwithcaleb.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 24, 2014. A couple of recent and awesome IBA counts. Before we started the IBA count in the Arlington WA area, we took a quick stop by the Lower River Road Ponds. The two ponds had many birds with the west pond having lots of mudflats which resulted in lots of peeps. As we scanned through the Least Sandpipers we were able to find one Western Sandpiper. Can you pick him out? There were also three Canvasbacks. See those gray dots? Before we knew it our IBA count was over, but after a stop ...
Birding With Caleb: October 2014
http://birdingwithcaleb.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Exploring the Prescott area. Prescott is a very nice area to bird. It has lots of habitats and with many habitats come many birds! We were only the 2nd car in the parking lot when we arrived, but that changed pretty quickly! There were bikers, hikers, and I even ran into Yavapai's eBird reviewer Steven Burk. While we were walking along the main trail I spied this mannequin taking a rest against a building! Here is a photo of a female and male. One out of two booya! There was a ...

http://birdingwithcaleb.blogspot.com/2015/06/my-first-young-birders-camp-chiricahuas.html
Thursday, June 18, 2015. My First Young Birder's Camp- The Chiricahua's (Part 1). A few months ago I was informed that on the AZNM Listserve there was going to be a young birder's camp to the Chiricahua Mountains in SEAZ, of course I jumped at the opportunity and thanks to Mr. Tom Hildebrandt, Mr. Joe Ford, and my parents I was able to go! I was ecstatic to see a lifer before the camp even started! Walker and I spent a lot of time during camp at the hummingbird feeders in search of the best photo opportu...
Birding With Caleb: Hitting the Jackpot!!!
http://birdingwithcaleb.blogspot.com/2015/06/hitting-jackpot.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Recently after going to the birding camp up in the Chiris I have kept in touch with Walker Noe. Once we started walking north along the road it didn't take us long to locate my target Yellow-billed. After locating these birds we were content with our day, but we looked at the clock and saw that it was only 6:00am and we still had nearly five hours left to bird! After observing the nighthawks we hiked further to the west end of Tres Rios which has many mature cottonwoods. On ou...

Wednesday, July 30, 2014. My first time as a guide! California has some amazing wildlife photographers like Brian Small (one of the best out there). On July 26th and 27th I had the honor of guiding one of those photographers, Mr. Steve Kaye. Mr. Steve has only been doing bird photography for three years and he is in my opinion nearly as good as Brian Small! Before I knew it our mornings birding was over. Later that afternoon when I was at our friends house I found this Pacific-slope Flycatcher. I was als...
Birding With Caleb: Birding the Glendale Recharge Ponds (The quest for 250)
http://birdingwithcaleb.blogspot.com/2014/08/birding-glendale-recharge-ponds-quest.html
Thursday, August 14, 2014. Birding the Glendale Recharge Ponds (The quest for 250). We then headed to the ponds and started scanning. The first shorebird we saw (after the Killdeer) was the Long-billed Dowitcher which were now in their beautiful breeding plumage or at least most of them were. You can see the non-breeding bird in the back. Along with the dowitchers were a couple of Least Sandpipers. There were also a couple of very entertaining Wilson's Phalaropes swimming around. Here are a few Canada Ge...

A blog about birding, wildlife, and citizen science - Genesis 2:19. Sunday, January 1, 2017. My Synopsis of the 2016 Arizona Field Ornithologists State Meeting. Early this last summer, my friend Caleb Strand. Informed me that the AZFO. Offered a youth scholarship to the 2016 State Meeting in Yuma. As a frequent user of both eBird. And the AZ/NM Listserv. I have learned quite a bit about other birders in Arizona. Out of the dozen or so presentations we were treated to, a few stuck out from the rest. This ...
