Builder, Teacher and Cumbrian Dialect Poet 1817-1886. John Richardson has been described by Frank Carruthers in his book Lore of the Lake Country. As perhaps the most famous son of the parish . John would surely have been astonished to read such a thing, since he was a humble man. But he has recently attracted chapters on his life and work, not only in The Story of St. By Geoffrey Darrall (details on this site), but also in Volume One of the Keswick Characters. Series, published by Bookcase in 2006.

He was buried on the battlefield, and is commemorated on a memorial in St Mary Abbotts Church, Kensington. Dale Head Hall was left to another son, George Stanger Leathes, who had lived in Australia for some years. He returned to England, and on the 29. Adam's Cross is located in the wall of the A591 on the left hand side when driving north (towards Keswick) at the northern end of the dual carriageway near Shoulthwaite, near the "lanes merge" sign. It takes us back some 300 years to a time when there was still religious persecution in England, and it marks the point 5 miles from Crosthwaite church, Keswick, past which an evicted independent minister was forbidden to proceed.

Writing of the book, Dr Robert David says:. The book is generously illustrated with old and new photographs, drawings, aerial views and old maps and documents, and there are, as well, reminiscences by older residents of times past.
