A Darling Journey

Monday, 4 August 2008. Well I've been a bit slack over the last few weeks. Instead of regularly updating my blog to let people know where I am and what has been happening I have instead been lying low. A lot however, has passed under the bridge since last I wrote. I'm in Hobart now and not on the river for a start. Yes thats right, I am literally thousands of kilometres away from my beloved rivers. Have I completed my odyssey? Well, yes and no. My last port of call on the Murray was Wellington. By the ti...

A Darling Journey: Wentworth at Last

http://adarlingjourney.blogspot.com/2008/06/wentworth-at-last.html

Sunday, 1 June 2008. Well who would have believed it. 1,500 hundred odd kilometres of discovery has so far brought forth myriad adventures and challenges and I have finally reached Wentworth. The confluence of the Darling. Rivers. I am writing this scarcely believing that I have indeed travelled from where the Barwon River turns into the Darling. The last leg - from Pooncarie. To Wentworth was a kicker. I guess I could have really guessed. The second last leg - from Menindee. A week or so into the leg fr...

A Darling Journey: Supplies and the route to Wentworth

http://adarlingjourney.blogspot.com/2008/05/supplies-and-route-to-wentworth.html

Thursday, 15 May 2008. Supplies and the route to Wentworth. Well, I've managed to reach Pooncarie, which is around 1,350 odd kilometres from where I started. A decent old paddle really. What does this all mean? Well, it means I only have about 240 kilometres to go before I reach the confluence of the Darling and Murray Rivers. It also means reaching Wentworth, which is a decent sized town and a place where I will actually be able to buy a reasonable amount of supplies. Posted by Christo Norman.

A Darling Journey: February 2008

http://adarlingjourney.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 27 February 2008. The Journey Draws Nigh. Well, its getting closer.  In just over a months time I will put paddle to water as I launch my kayak into the Darling River. 160; The water is good, the depth very good and I expect that there may even be a bit of flowing water. Just to put this all into perspective for a second: from North to South, Tasmania is around 280 kilometres long.  This is. My primary goal is simply to paddle down the Darling River to the confluence of the Murray at Wentworth.

A Darling Journey: The People You Meet

http://adarlingjourney.blogspot.com/2008/05/breakfast-this-morning-was-supurb.html

Sunday, 11 May 2008. The People You Meet. Breakfast this morning, was superb. Huge as well, which was good. And all because of the great people you meet on a journey like this. Wonderfully tender steak, onion, exquisite tomatoes and a couple of eggs is a great way to start the morning. Who could say no to such a proposition? In the end I was given the old boundary riders quarters. The grass was nice and green all around, I had my own kitchen to do with as I wished and the showers were excellent. ...Aside...

Just dipping my toe in. A pretentious blog by a poor emailer. Sunday, 30 September 2007. The Passage of Time. It is, for a foreign walker (and worker) who speaks little of the language and knows less about the cultural vagaries, a maddening, infuriating way to run the world. The thing is, I love it! It is a heirarchy I could live with. Posted by Alex Norman. Saturday, 29 September 2007. Such was my first gastronomic faux pas for this trip. I knew the French (and especially Lyonais (sp? Just dipping my toe in. A pretentious blog by a poor emailer. Tuesday, 27 November 2007. Like a Friend Expected/Sonic Tonic. It's cold now. Starting to move into the 'properly cold' territory. The next few days walk will take me higher and closer to the open, cold meseta - the giant plateau of central northern Spain. While at only around 800m, the lack of nearby ocean and the vast openness of the land means that bitter cold is likely to be my companion for the next two weeks. Posted by Alex Norman. Subsc...

Just dipping my toe in. A pretentious blog by a poor emailer. Wednesday, 27 June 2007. You will return. This will frighten you. Don't be afraid of getting bored. Don't be afraid of tasting vanilla when for so long you've bathed in magical spices. Even vanilla has a smokey sweetness that can mystify the tongue. Just dipping my toe in. A pretentious blog by a poor emailer. Tuesday, 8 May 2007. A conversation last weekend with a good friend about the strains of travelling for work got me thinking about the realities of life for the working traveller. It seems every other travel writer puts out at least one article bemoaning the life of the working traveller, and I certainly know many people who travel for work who have grown to loathe it. Long days, stressful. I'm such a hippy), knowing that it will eventually en...

A Darling Kind of Life

Wednesday, January 14, 2015. Loving someone is the hardest work you'll ever do.". I heard this line in a Hallmark movie I was watching with Mama and immediately it was suctioned to my thoughts. There is so much truth to that line in the love story we were watching while I was cuddled under a throw blanket curled up on the couch with my toes tucked under my husbands leg and an empty bowl of ice cream placed on the table next to me. Simple moment with complex thoughts. I'm nothing special. I'm human&#4...
