A developmental disability can be described as genetic or chromosomal disorder such as Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Mental health (dual diagnosis) issues tend to affect people with developmental disabilities and can include psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia as well as emotional difficulty stemming from encountering traumatic life events such as abandonment, abuse and harassment. Abuse is a significant issue for people with developmental disabilities as their dependence on supports makes them vulnerable. Types of abuse include: physical, sexual, financial, emotional and neglect. Lack of education, lack of self-esteem and self-advocacy skills, lack of understanding of social norms and appropriate behaviour and communication difficulties are strong contributing factors to the high incidence of abuse among this population.
