Sweet and Sour- The Type 1 Diabetes Rollercoaster. A type 1 twenty-something's blog of the ups and downs of a life of diabetes and all that comes with it! Friday, 4 November 2016. This is what diabetes looks like. Long time no blog! Happy Diabetes Awareness Month, I hope you're wearing plenty of blue. Let me show you what diabetes looks like. First it does this. Sweet and Sour- The Type 1 Diabetes Rollercoaster. A type 1 twenty-something's blog of the ups and downs of a life of diabetes and all that comes with it! Monday, 9 January 2017. I've decided that 2017 is going to be an exciting year. Don't question my control over that outcome, just embrace my positivity. I'm starting a CGM (sensor that checks your blood sugar 24/7 and alarms when you're going low) full time this week. I'm travelling in short bursts while I finally get a holiday from uni and placement.

She would have a pretty typical routine every time we visited. She'd look at each person and comment on what beautiful eyes, noses and mouths we all had, and ask the others to agree with her. She'd repeat this a few times over, sometimes ask why we were there, and where we were going. 1 October 2016 at 21:30. A while back ...

Sweet and Sour- The Type 1 Diabetes Rollercoaster. A type 1 twenty-something's blog of the ups and downs of a life of diabetes and all that comes with it! Tuesday, 13 September 2016. So, being the stubborn cow I am, sometimes I fight back. With myself. yup. But when the time came my level was 5.0 with a bunch of insulin still in my system from a later lunch. It was dropping quickly into the 4s and as it did I grew more and more frustrated. How does this happen? The one time I try and do something positiv...

A blog about diabetes, voldemort, and how many carbs are in *that* piece of chocolate cake. Monday, 29 February 2016. I collect Diabetics. Accidentally. Not in a creepy, Ed Gein sort of way. I just happen to find them, everywhere. In Italy, I found 2. Or 2 found. My pump. You can't really miss my pump, especially if you know what a pump is. King sticks out a little. Just need a miniature quaffle. I agreed with her, and we had a bit of a chat about the joys of diabetes. By now, the restaurant was fill...

A blog about diabetes, voldemort, and how many carbs are in *that* piece of chocolate cake. Thursday, 31 March 2016. What do you get if you place Jill Pantozzi, Michelle Goldsmith and Robert Hoge - 3 writers who are also prominent chronic illness and disability activists - in a room with a few microphones? A superbly insightful panel on the use of disability and illness in journalism and story telling. A speculative Fiction convention. It says to the reader "Don't say anything to me". It makes them a...

A blog about diabetes, voldemort, and how many carbs are in *that* piece of chocolate cake. Thursday, 23 June 2016. I was very excited to be given the chance to talk with Shadow Health Minister Catherine King and ALP Candidate for my electorate of Bonner, Laura Fraser Hardy, about the recent CGM funding announcement. Before I met them, I was quite nervous to be talking to Catherine and Laura. I felt like there was a lot of pressure (that I put on myself) to make sure that they really knew what it mea...
Dreams of Lewis: Both Feet on the Ground

A blog about diabetes, voldemort, and how many carbs are in *that* piece of chocolate cake. Monday, 18 July 2016. Both Feet on the Ground. This year Diabetes Australia focused on the 4,400 diabetes-related amputations per year, 85% of which are preventable. The campaign was received with mixed results, most likely because it did address an issue that people don't like to think of in relation to themselves or their clients. Why don't we turn a negative complication into a positive message? That won't hurt...

A blog about diabetes, voldemort, and how many carbs are in *that* piece of chocolate cake. Thursday, 8 September 2016. Drink Eat. Drink. Eat. In this state, I am not a person anymore. Who I am has left me. What I am has left me. There's a monster in my body. Controlling me. It's only goal is to feed. The monster gets angry when it's interrupted. I get angry for the monster. I am not me anymore. I am a vessel for the monster, and my body is not my own. I can feel the monster in my skin as I feed it. ...

I forget where I was going with this post, because I am definitely replaying the Lion King in my head right now. I know what I'll be watching tonight. Be prepared. Constant Vigilance. Dreams of Lewis: Endoscopic Review
http://justnormalash.blogspot.com/2016/08/endoscopic-review.html
A blog about diabetes, voldemort, and how many carbs are in *that* piece of chocolate cake. Wednesday, 24 August 2016. There are some rare perks to having Type 1 Diabetes. Being first-in-line for a medical procedure is one of them. After 4 frustrating weeks of glutening myself, dealing with the pain that came after eating and the resulting hypos, I was cheering when the morning finally rolled around. It was as I was explaining the CGM that a second nurse entered stage right to remark on my insulin pump.

Wednesday, 11 January 2017. 6 years on the pump. Today marks day 2193 on the pump. Pretty fitting considering I'm starting a CGM full time tomorrow. My change to the pump happened when I was 15. I'd not yet had T1 for a full year but I'd decided that injecting in public was just too. But then it was suddenly amazing. I finally got the hang of it an...
