All the quirks of academic libraries and then some. June 11, 2013. Doesn’t matter whether it’s public or academic libraries, when it rains it pours, right? Had this “all hands” meeting today wherein all library staff and faculty meet and catch each other up about the mundane and profane happenings in the library. Custodial powers-that-be offered a tip to our library staff person who procured these cleaning implements just in case of disaster:. But then someone in our meeting asked a great question:.

All the quirks of academic libraries and then some. Intellectually curious (and lucky) librarian. July 8, 2011. Read an article at Harvard Business Review. Yesterday am called Why Some People Have All the Luck. Anthony Tjan says that lucky people have the right attitude (nevermind all those idea killers. One of three aspects the lucky possess is intellectual curiosity. Here’s how Tjan couches it:. Intellectual curiosity is an active response to humility. Naturally, while at the reference desk, we meet ne...

All the quirks of academic libraries and then some. September 8, 2009. Sheesh. It feels like ages since I’ve written in this space. Last week our students returned to campus and that was rather overwhelming. You can be underwhelmed and overwhelmed, but can you be whelmed? Earlier this week I learned that you can be gruntled. It means. Cause to be more favorably inclined; gain the good will of. We know what disgruntled means, but I’m making it a point to use the word gruntle more often. Tweeting and Youtu...

All the quirks of academic libraries and then some. February 22, 2012. A few months ago I stumbled upon a new bookstore, virtually. It exists in Pennsylvania, and I hope to visit it someday. How I learned about it, I cannot recall, but I signed up to receive their newsletter in which they highlight recently received books at their store. In the meantime, I look forward to its fabulous newsletters. Hearts and Minds Books. And The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction. Harris was homeschooled and m...

In the past two years, I’ve been almost all of the above. 8221; He was using Facebook to organize his life, and he expected things he needed to be there. I followed up and asked him what he thought about librarians on Facebook, and he replied that his professors were already there, so librarians were also welcome. I took my own advice to he...

124; Comments RSS. Posted on March 25, 2009. As I mentioned earlier, students in LALT 101 are blogging their assignments. This semester. While several students opted to shut down their blogs to all but their classmates and me, several others left theirs open to the world. Students aren’t required to use anything other than the standard WordPress template and certainly aren’t expected to blog anything other than LALT 101 homework. But some have gone above and beyond. First, a basic blog. Through last spri...

124; Comments RSS. Creating an information need. Posted on June 11, 2008. As I wrote about in an earlier post. Each semester I teach two to three sections of a required library class here at AUC. Like a great opportunity for students to engage with library resources. We have about 13 hours with them… a dream compared to 50-minute one shots. At least in one-shot sessions, students have a paper coming up and know they need to research eventually. This worked, sorta. Some students got it: they came up w...

124; Comments RSS. Joys of expat life. Posted on July 15, 2008. I’m back in the United States right now, enjoying six weeks of paid vacation. This is one of the great benefits of working overseas: a long annual leave, with paid airfare back to your country of citizenship. What I didn’t anticipate was how little access I’d have to the internet. And, therefore, what a terrible time it was to start my new blog. In Seattle in August and another for Internet Librarian International. In London in October.

Why not use Google? | The Chatty Librarian

124; Comments RSS. Why not use Google? Posted on September 17, 2008. Classes started at AUC two weeks ago, but we’re just starting our first real session next week, in part because of an exemption exam and in part because of some construction delays on our new campus. In any case, as I prepare to teach two sections of our semester-long library class, I find myself wondering how I’ll convince students of the value of library resources. This morning I googled. I dismissed the first result. This article?
