Mystery Towers - Shoreham-by-Sea - Home Page
The so-called Mystery Towers. Were built towards the end of the First World War (1914 - 18) at the entrance to Shoreham Harbour, Sussex. Shoreham had a suitable calm water area - The Gut and supplies of sand and shingle, so in June1918 construction began on a number of the towers. Rising 180 feet from an approx. 190ft base, 9,000 tons of concrete formed a honeycomb in a hexagonal shape rising in narrowing stages. Former Toll Bridge across the River Adur at Shoreham-by-Sea. This wooden structure was built under an Act of 1781 to a similar design to that of today, which is as rebuilt in 1916. It was bought by the LBSCR railway company in 1861, when they built the branch line from Shoreham to Steyning and onto Horsham. The various railway companies, finally British Rail, continued to collect the tolls until it was replaced by the modern flyover, opened in 1970. From a Heritage trail 2000 sign at West Grinstead Church. In 1825 the Baybridge Canal Company was formed to widen and straighten the River Adur up to Bay Bridge, just to the west of here (the church) beside the A24 (that would put it close to Knepp). A wharf had already been constructed here in 1811 to unload lime, chalk and coal and this survived until 1982. The company gradually declined after the opening of the Horsham-Shoreham railway in 1861 which was closed in 1966. South of West Grinstead Church.
