Observations on using the Go programming language (a.k.a., golang) to build just plain ol' applications. We can now end the "make-copy-equals" dance every time we want to extend a slice. With '. T := make( my type. My slice = t. T := new(my type. My slice = append(my slice,t). And have code that is more intuitive. That's the spirit of Go. Var ss string. Ss = append(ss,"once upon a time"). Ss = append(ss,"you dressed so fine"). For , v := range ss {. Type str struct {. Var myStr str. St := str{v,i}.

Observations on using the Go programming language (a.k.a., golang) to build just plain ol' applications. Trapping signals in Go. I saw that TrapSignals(). Wasn't working as planned - e.g., didn't trap SIGQUIT - the application just dumped the call stack and exit'd. Reading through the stack trace I found that the Go authors have forced a runtime exit on a broad range of signals. (Of course, you can never trap SIGKILL, '9'.). For GOOS=darwin you cannot trap signals 3-12, and. Links to this post.

There are times when we'd like to make sure that certain clean-up functions are performed when the program shuts down - i.e., database connections are closed, communication sockets are released, in-memory databases are persisted, etc. Go, of course, does provide a neat way to clean stuff up within the context of a single function / method, '. The standard idiom is as follows.

Tuesday, February 1, 2011. Well, it's official, in case you hadn't noticed, 2011 is here to stay. January is over, February has stood her ground. She doesn't want to come into '11 as an underachiever, so she dropped the windchill to -36 for tonight.ahhh, tropical! I think I get bored. I dream of sunny skies, and time to twirl around the yard with my children. Both of which must not be enjoyed if my closets are beckoning. It will give me something to do for the other 6 months of winter. :). When something...

When I finally got cleaned up (except my foot) I got my photo taken with the pretty flowers! I only tried to eat a few). And with the Minions and one of my people! There was this big scary gorilla there too. Naughty puppy ;-).

Adventures in Good Business. Bike locks in Scandinavia. I have been travelling to Scandinavia a lot over the past year and I keep noticing how bikes are rarely locked up. As a cyclist in London I am all too familiar with the cutthroat art of locking up a bike after a lengthy strategic assessment of the surrounding area, review of the strength of the fence/post/rack, visibility to passing pedestrians and also carrying an assortment of cables and locks weighing more than my bike…. Forget road closures and ...

But if your gloves get wet because you are hiking in the rain or whitewater rafting and temperatures are cool or cold (and why else would you be wearing gloves? They are worse than useless.
