Adventures in Nairobi

Monday, June 30, 2014. I have one lock on my front door. Just one. That's weird and unsettling. At minimum, there should be two. And then I should lock my bedroom door also. That would be better, more right. I look out the window and see normal and more normal, and that too is weird. No gate. No guards. No wall. No electric fence. Nothing. Nothing at all. A bit of limbo. But also an opportunity. Still sorting out the specifics on the latter. The Nairobi chapter has not ended. Perhaps it never will. Wedne...

Adventures in Nairobi: September 2013

http://www.adventuresinnairobi.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 30, 2013. We are doing better. Well, I am anyhow. I am carefully choosing my activites, including the company I share. I am not avoiding my friends that have been hurt, or have suffered the most severe losses, I am avoiding chatter. I am avoiding the news as well. It's helping me heal. Having respite. And time of course, always heals. The people in our lives is what makes living so special. Anyhow, I am not going to dwell. I can't right now. Saturday, September 28, 2013. To ask them ple...

Sunday, March 23, 2014. The most grueling endurance sport that ever. Is deployment when you are off your home soil. Is deployment when off of your home soil, when you are a sensitive person. A work in progress. I guess we all are. These last few months here are starting to feel grueling. Don't get me wrong, I am fully aware of all the blessings- I have so so SO many- I am starting to feel tired. Like I am driving with the emergency break on. Sunday, March 16, 2014. The greatest honor I have ever received.

The cat is out of the bag- well, he's been making lot's of noises and people are starting to ask, so the cat, I am pulling out just now (well maybe not all of the cat- he's fiesty). So now, Eva and I go home- to the US- without a plan. We will figure it out. We will make it make sense. For this I credit my very strong mother, who taug...Simple te...

Dear Emilie: January 2012

http://letterstoemilie.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 15, 2012. Darling. I wish I could record these moments and play them back with rhapsody (in blue), eyes closed, as accurately as neurons firing in your own skull. One day that won’t seem so sci-fi or Hollywood. Until then…. I find myself in the uncomfortable position of stupefied gratification when you assert. Yourself. Should I reach for my staff and draw the metaphorical line, or even worse, spare not the proverbial rod? I know, beyond expression becomes a difficult, if not impossible p...

Dear Emilie: March 2011

http://letterstoemilie.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 24, 2011. Little Ms. Independent. You actually cry a little bit when you do it.not sure if that is because you naturally have empathy and know you are not supposed to be hitting or because you see the shocked look on our faces. Instead, when I sat down on the glider with you, you arched your back and you slide off the chair and walked to the back of the glider and began rocking me! What a role reversal! Thank goodness you never fell off the bed! Mommy will always miss those days when you ...

Dear Emilie: September 2011

http://letterstoemilie.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 30, 2011. Oh my gosh I cannot believe it has been this long since I wrote you last. Boy how you have changed in the last 6 months! Actually, it seems you get a little smarter every week. This summer we spent some time at the beach and you LOVED jumping in the waves. You learned how to say “Seashells” and know that they come from the beach. You have quite the sweet tooth…you love dots, M and Ms and honey! You love Barbie dolls and take them to your crib to sleep now. When mommy asked you...

Dear Emilie: February 2011

http://letterstoemilie.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 6, 2011. Those Feet Were Made for Walking. You have really started walking now and you are quite the sight! You are so proud of yourself and smile and giggle as you make your way across the room. It’s amazing how balanced you are at such a young age! You actually say words without being prompted which really shows me how brilliant you are. For example, when someone puts their jacket on, you say bye bye before they even make it to the door! So Marley eats pretty well these days! You are a...

Monday, January 17, 2011. Now that Ive actually started writing you letters, Im kicking myself for not having done it sooner. Then again, its nice have a body of time to look back and reflect on. Like a year. Your first year. Well lets see, so many things stand out. You first bath, your first trip to the hospital (ask Mom to tell you about the Tapioca Iincident). The first time you fell asleep on me, your first tooth, your first birthday and so many more. Saturday, January 15, 2011. December 26, 2009.

Tuesday, June 14, 2011. A Poem for You. I thought you might enjoy this. But I know that she will anyway, so instead I’ll always keep an extra supply of chocolate and rain boats nearby, ‘cause there is no heartbreak that chocolate can’t fix. Okay, there’s a few heartbreaks chocolate can’t fix. But that’s what the rain boots are for, because rain will wash away everything if you let it. Your voice is small but don’t ever stop singing and when they finally hand you heartbreak, slip hatred and war unde...

Adventures in my Urban Garden. MISHAPS AND ACCIDENTAL MIRACLES IN THE LIFE OF A NOVICE GARDENER. May 21, 2010. Keeping Hope . I Mean Seedlings Alive. So I picked up my seedlings last Saturday and like clockwork I started to get completely stressed out about how to keep them alive until it was warm enough to plant them. I negotiated with the farmer from ReVision House. And the staff from Allandale farm. It's a challenge. This year I was determined to do better. I found enough milk jugs, soy milk, ...The p...

Despite being in Kenya for over two years, I haven’t yet tasted proper nyama choma. So, with my Kenyan friend and willing tour guide Marvin, I went hunting for nyama choma. A nyama choma joint.
