Adventures of an Artist Teacher

This blog is a reflective practice of Liz Chisholm, an art educator working and learning in Chicago. It is a virtual space to share students' processes and accomplishments. The blog documents art my students created at Coonley Elementary and Lane Tech High School, as well as work made during summer and after school programs. It features projects which may be of use to other teachers and artists, and it serves as a reminder of what works and what didn't.

Adventures of an Artist Teacher: March 2012

http://adventuresofanartist-teacher.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Adventures of an Artist Teacher. March 14, 2012. Reflecting on Our Work. Several weeks ago, 2nd grade students used an "Art Sandwich" as a tool to critique and complement another student's collage illustration. They paired up in class and gave each other two complements and a suggestion for improvement. Compliments are the carbs that keep us working and fuel our efforts, and suggestions are the protein that help us grow as artists and citizens and give us energy over the long haul. Adventures of an Artist Teacher. July 8, 2012. Paintings Take Us Places. The Kindergarteners as well as the 1st graders at Coonley, learned about how to mix secondary colors from primary colors. Next, we looked at paintings by several different artists such as Rousseau and Matisse, and we talked about how artists take us places through their paintings. I let the students choose between the categories of "above ground", "below ground" "underwater" or "on the ground" for their painted subject. July 7, 2012.

Adventures of an Artist Teacher: October 2011

http://adventuresofanartist-teacher.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Adventures of an Artist Teacher. October 30, 2011. In preparation for an autobiographical comic strip project, 5th-8th graders at Coonley spent two weeks learning about and practicing the technique of contour line drawing. First we discussed the difference between a contour line drawing and an outline. Contour line drawings include lines that are both inside and outside of the forms we see. We also discussed what it means to draw from observation. Blind Contour Line Drawing. Contour Line Drawing By Jenny.

CDTES: Putting Chicago to Work. Newer posts →. February 3, 2011 · 7:16 pm. There’s a tradition in the CDTES office. When a client receives a job placement, the CDTES family will offer their congratulations with a special song about this important step towards economic independence. In June 2010, Chastity Jackson was the recipient of such a performance and could not hold back the tears of pride during the moment. I lost everything I had because of downsizing at work and the economy, she said. Many of the ...
