MAYA'S ADVENTURES

Wednesday, 8 December 2010. Maya returns one year on. Exactly one year ago, a three year old girl called Maya, with a mop of strawberry blond curls padded along the tiled floor of Bangalore Airport, away from India, and towards England. She clutched a balloon in one hand, her Daddy's hand in the other and a head full of experiences of her year in India. And now, one year on, does she remember anything when she pulls out some Indian clothes from her dressing up box? Or when I put some Indian music on?

MAYA'S ADVENTURES: Happy New Year!

http://adventuringmaya.blogspot.com/2010/01/happy-new-year.html

Friday, 1 January 2010. Maya enjoying the snow in Basingstoke. Finding the chocolates on the Christmas tree. Hanging up the stockings and putting out mince pies and milk for Father Christmas. A boxing day walk along the clifftops of Hope Cove, Devon. Returning from Devon to Basingstoke - worn out! New Year to you all! Wishing you all a fantastic 2010, filled with love and happiness and laughter. But is it really all forgotten? Yesterday, I made chai for the first time since getting back and suddenly Maya...

MAYA'S ADVENTURES: November 2009

http://adventuringmaya.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 November 2009. It is chilly winter time in Bangalore: people are wrapped up in shawls, thick jumpers and woolly hats and Maya, Andy and I all have full blown colds. Oh, I should also mention that it's 28 degrees. Am I being serious? Yes Are we going to get the shock of our lives when we arrive back in the UK next week? Probably. But at least we already. Small shop fronts with hanging bananas,. Scruffy dogs wheezing in the shade,. Women carrying huge tubs of water back to their homes,. Ok, ha...

MAYA'S ADVENTURES: June 2009

http://adventuringmaya.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Monday, 29 June 2009. Break from the City. Our bodies and souls have been craving fresh air, trees that are not surrounded by concrete and wide, open spaces. So on Sunday we made an impromptu decision and went to an organic farm an hour from Bangalore called Navadarshanam (nope, we can’t pronounce it either) which is home to seven families living communally and run on Gandhian principles. Saturday, 27 June 2009. Cooler climes for an English Rose. On the chilly side. Tuesday, 23 June 2009. I got my photo&...

Saturday, 31 May 2014. Unpronounceable campsites, dust and dragon slaying. Benji had so much fun yesterday morning with our neighbour Mojo and school friend Warimu, making dens and reading books. Perhaps this made up for the disappointment of not bringing himself to make it to Christian's house on friday. Dry and dusty.' Hmmm.doesn't sound hugely promising. The only review on trip advisor strongly recommends that you visit the site only. See you the other dusty side of Olorgasailie :). Anyway, today's bl...

Saturday, 26 July 2014. Birthdays and beautiful, big houses. Great excitement this morning as Daddy was back when Benji woke up and he got to open up his birthday present - a brand new bike (Yep, it'll be interesting getting that one back to Kenya). Godmother Jess came to help Benji celebrate with a day out at the (heaving) Costwolds Country Park and beach then cake back home. Lavender and dragonflies - pure English summer. Our pad for a fortnight with Andy outside.slightly happy to be here. Were clearly...

Monday, 30 June 2014. Excitement, rural lunches and goodbyes. England is so close I can almost taste it:. The peas, green and round and sweet. The cheese, abundant and ubiquitous. Trails to walk, bathtubs to spend two hours in, roads to be driven along without being swallowed by potholes, buses to jump on without fearing for my life. Roundabouts where drivers actually give way, sausages to sink my teeth into. Strawberries raspberries loganberries and very nearly blackberries. Aaaaaaah. Cannot wait. Going...

Monday, 29 September 2014. What's the time Mr Lion? Are there any other parents out there who don't have much in-between, calm time amongst their children? A non wild dogs day for Benji and his big sisters. Fien and her family's wooden cabin. Saturday, 27 September 2014. A lazy day after. Stuck in the mud at KCB. Before the guests arrived for the party last night, Tamzin in England organised a four way skype chat which was so lovely. Thank you Tam! From left to right: Louisa, Tamsin and Tamzin. PLEASE bu...

Friday, 31 October 2014. I happened to read on a Nairobi ex-pat facebook marketplace group the other day that somebody was looking for an orange pumpkin to carve for halloween and did anybody know where they could get one? One of the responses: If you find an orange pumpkin in Nairobi I will eat my shorts. Ah. Ok. Saved me a search then. We toyed with the idea of various other fruits and vegetables (melon? A little witch outside our house. Crudites with blood hummus, anyone? Lots of kids asked. Well,...

Wednesday, 1 April 2015. Goodbye to the Benji Blog. THE MAGIC OF MAYA. THE LOVE AND LIGHT OF LILY. Lily in Kenya at the start of her blog. THE BRAVERY OF BENJAMIN. So, little Benj. My Dad, your Grandpa Harry, always used to tell me I had chutzpah. This is a Yiddish word meaning guts. Your grandpa definitely had this in bucketfuls and this is what I wish for you Benjamin: curiosity, self-belief, openness, humour, the ability to use your head, heart and hands with equal skill and a whole lot of chutzpah.

Note how my children have all dressed in matching African fabric outfits (the shirt Lily is wearing is actually Benji's, but she insisted on being the same top and bottom! Monday, 29 December 2014. An Indian Ocean Christmas for Benji. Wasini is a tiny pinprick of an island off the southern coast of Kenya, not far from the Tanzanian border. Run your finger along a map of the area and you'd easily miss it. Rising from coral and mangrove swamps, this Muslim island has two villages, several mosques and madrasa's, no cars or roads, no electricity or running water and Swahili ruins that crumble gently down into the Indian Ocean. A view of Wasini Village from the coral gardens.

Thursday, 28 August 2014. Ah, Shambala, Shambala. Tired? No comment. Happy to have spent those five days in a field in Northamptonshire? Very, very, very. Maya, Lola and Benji giving the trugs a test run on the first night. The brilliant DJ who kept parents and kids entertained with his turntables outside the baby bathing yurt whilst queuing. A lovely little cocktail corner. Meeting up with old school friend Joey and her lovely little Laurie. The Sanchez and Narracott families (minus Otto's head). Arrivi...

Wednesday, 30 April 2014. A gentle little boy watching boisterous big boys. To Benji. You can almost see the cogs turning as he thinks Ah, these are how big boys behave. For all his loudness, physically he's a gentle little soul and it's very interesting indeed for him to see how big boys can and do throw their weight around. I wonder how little or much of the Class Two Naughty Boys behaviour he might start imitating in the future. Lily and Benji in our reading corner at home. Sunday, 27 April 2014.

Living life, seeking God and trying to be his instruments in this world. "He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." - Jim Elliot. Friday, July 31, 2015. Throw in there a health scare that nearly resulted in a medivac to Australia and a logistical nightmare I am still thanking God about and also still wondering what is wrong with me…. Where do I even begin? ENGL 1313 was a learning experience. It broadened my thinking about cemeteries, graves, and death. I learned how to write a profile essay and I got to work in a group for a bigger project. There were parts of it that were hard, but overall it was a good experience. PS Sorry this post is so shambly. I just needed to vent a little bit, get it out, and then feel better. So, reader, sorry you had to suffer through that, but I feel better now.
