A Family Tapestry

Sunday, May 17, 2015. How hard is it to find a name like Kusharvska? When I run across an unusual surname to research—like Aktabowski, another tidbit in my father’s line—it always impresses me as an easy accomplishment. Why? Because the oddity of the surname should increase the chances that the right person will be quickly located. Silly me. That is only in my mind, where the theoretical reigns supreme. So now that I’ve agreed to take on the mission of locating Anna Kusharvska. The beauty of digitized do...

A Family Tapestry: May 2015

http://afamilytapestry.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 31, 2015. It’s funny how, when being absent from a place for a while, the return trip makes one sensitized to all the minute changes that occurred during that absence. I know that’s the disoriented feeling that descended upon me when I returned to my childhood home, many years after graduating college. Hey, there were roads that no longer went in the same direction as they used to go! In northern County Tipperary. Ireland, this family chose to leave their homeland and head for the New World.

A Family Tapestry: Dodging the Details

http://afamilytapestry.blogspot.com/2015/05/dodging-details.html

Wednesday, May 13, 2015. What could have occurred, leading up to the year 1915 in metropolitan New York, to convince a German immigrant that he needed to disguise his identity? That’s a question I’ve asked myself, over and over, as I ponder the possible reasons why my paternal grandfather might have disappeared from his Brooklyn home after 1910 and re-invented himself as an Irish-American citizen in Queens by 1915. Of course, the key assumption embedded in that question is the proviso, if. Things changed...

A Family Tapestry: Pondering the Matrilineal

http://afamilytapestry.blogspot.com/2015/05/pondering-matrilineal.html

Sunday, May 10, 2015. It’s Mother’s Day. And that makes us think of our mothers—mostly of some detail that helps us realize how grateful we are for what they’ve done for us. This is a day tailor-made for reminiscing about those particular women in our lives—first of all, for our mothers. And then their mothers. Pretty soon, we find ourselves thinking about their. It was four years ago, this weekend, that I launched A Family Tapestry. In doing so, it becomes so clear what a chain of relationships the gene...

A Family Tapestry: Doing What Counts

http://afamilytapestry.blogspot.com/2015/05/doing-what-counts.html

Saturday, May 9, 2015. So, how did I do? Specifically, on the maternal side of my tree, somewhat less than progress in previous weeks. I advanced from 3,059 to 3,444 people in this tree, but I wasn't able to make any contacts with DNA matches, other than continuing conversations with those I'd contacted last month. Far Side of Fifty. May 9, 2015 at 9:09 AM. Enjoy your weekend of celebration! I figured she was way too smart to be done with just a four year degree.:). May 10, 2015 at 12:23 AM. Brick Walls,...

A Family Tapestry: Entering a New Stage of Invisibility

http://afamilytapestry.blogspot.com/2015/05/entering-new-stage-of-invisibility.html

Thursday, May 7, 2015. Entering a New Stage of Invisibility. Having found “ Aunt Rose. 8221; my paternal grandfather’s supposed sister, has not turned out to be the golden key to unlock the door barring me from my family’s secret heritage. While I’m grateful to have found out about Rose, hers has been a life leading me through research twists and turns. In the city’s death index, it still doesn’t help me. Would that make her daughter Rose Kusharvska as well? And what of the surname Miller? I mentioned, t...

Bantry To Ballyhea: August 2013

Saturday, August 3, 2013. The Marriage of John Clancy and Alice Bryan. Inistioge, County Kilkenny. My great aunt, Alice (O'Brien/Bryan) Clancy, was born in Inistioge, Kilkenny, on May 1, 1872, the daughter of Michael and Ellen (Tobin) Bryan. I knew from the ships manifest that she emigrated to Boston from Queenstown in September of 1899 with her future husband, John Francis Clancy, on the S. S. Cephalonia. From now on, I'll take the possibility of elopement into account when looking for a marriage! If yo...

A Family That Birds Together

For Christmas this year, my husband crafted this Noah's Ark set for our son. Each year he plans on adding a few pairs of animals, and will continue to add to it even when our boy has outgrown playing with it. Our ark is now one of our family's treasures, and I hope it will be an heirloom that will be passed on for many generations. This is the ark before it was assembled. After looking at a lot of handmade arks, he designed this one using Tom's Arks. Here it is assembled, ready to be painted. I love the ...
