African countries have the greatest need for a vaccine, and the greatest potential to contribute to the complicated and intense research effort required to eventually have an effective and affordable vaccine. The coming years will be critical for AIDS vaccine development in Africa, with a major large-scale vaccine efficacy trial in Africa set to begin within the next two to three years.
