Caring For Your Hands. Beginners can find playing African drums painful to the hands. This should ease within a few weeks of regular playing as the hands become accustomed to it. Tips for Buying a Djembe. Wood should be in good condition. Traditional jembes are usually carved from a single piece of hardwood. Examine the shell carefully and avoid buying a drum with any major cracks or chips. Rope should be in good condition. Restringing a jembe is a hard job, so check for weak areas in the binding. Caring For Your Djembe. Don't sit, lean or rest objects on the face of the drum. That means feet, cigarettes, coffee cups or Aunt Bertha. Don't heat the skin. Many players do this to 'warm up' the skin. Used traditionally to dry and tighten the skin, but has become unnecessary with the use of rope instead of leather or wooden pegs.
